2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But premium SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating city streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC Reviews Summary

It may be all-new for 2023, but the GLC's redesign is so conservative, it's hard to tell. Bigger changes can be found inside and the overall upgrades keep it at the top of the small luxury SUV class. The previous-generation GLC Coupe returns unchanged but replacements are in the works.

Look and feel

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer presented a classic SUV aesthetic, sharing its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer. This resulted in a traditional design featuring a tall hood, broad shoulders, and trapezoidal wheel arches. The Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a standard black roof, a unique hood, front fascia, and grille. The grille leaned forward slightly, with laser-etched knurling in the slots, and the wheel centre caps were protected by acrylic glass. The vehicle's body-on-frame architecture allowed for independent suspension, and the use of aluminum and composite materials helped reduce weight. Inside, the Grand Wagoneer offered high-end features like 24-way power front seats with memory and massage functions, Nappa leather upholstery, and American Walnut wood trim, setting it apart from the standard Wagoneer.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC, while redesigned, maintained a familiar look that echoed its predecessor. The most noticeable change was the narrower taillights, but the overall design remained consistent with the first-generation GLC. This continuity was appreciated for its timeless elegance, though some desired more distinctiveness. The interior saw a significant update, aligning with newer Mercedes models, featuring a large vertical infotainment touchscreen and a tablet-like instrument panel. The materials and construction quality remained top-notch, offering a simpler and cleaner cockpit design compared to competitors. The GLC Coupe retained its coupe-like roofline, differentiating it from the standard GLC 300, and its interior, though older, still offered some usability advantages.

Performance

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

6/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

6/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a robust 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine, delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, allowed the Grand Wagoneer to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in about six seconds, impressive for its 2,900-kilogram weight. The vehicle came standard with a Quadra-Drive II 4WD system, featuring a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential, enhancing traction. The Quadra-Lift air suspension system, standard on the Grand Wagoneer, offered adjustable height for various driving conditions. Despite its power, the Grand Wagoneer was best suited for a leisurely pace, as its ride could become bouncy at higher speeds, and its steering was not precise.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 featured a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This setup, combined with a 9-speed automatic transmission and standard 4Matic AWD, provided smooth acceleration, reaching 100 km/h in approximately 6.2 seconds. The GLC's brake pedal was slightly soft but effective, and its suspension prioritized comfort over sporty handling, offering a smooth ride and a quiet cabin. The GLC Coupe continued with its older engine, while the AMG GLC 43 Coupe offered a sportier option with a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6, delivering 385 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque, achieving 100 km/h in about 4.7 seconds.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

8/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer accommodated seven passengers with standard second-row captain’s chairs or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It offered more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. Cargo space was generous, with 775 litres behind the third row and 2,007 litres with the third row stowed. However, with all seats folded, its 2,667 litres of cargo space was less than some rivals. The Grand Wagoneer boasted a towing capacity of 4,472 kilograms, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its extra weight. Standard features included a sunroof, four-zone climate control, and a 360-degree camera system.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC offered comfortable front seats with ample adjustment options and synthetic leather upholstery that mimicked genuine hides. The interior featured a large centre console bin with a wireless charging pad and cupholders, though the piano black lid attracted dust and fingerprints. The GLC provided ample space for front passengers and adequate rear seat accommodation, though headroom was slightly limited. The standard GLC offered 620 litres of cargo space, smaller than some rivals, but sufficient for most needs. The GLC Coupe's sloping roofline reduced cargo capacity to 500 litres and affected rear headroom.

Technology

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a McIntosh audio system. Second-row passengers had a 10.25-inch touchscreen for climate control, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system added two 10.1-inch screens. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system, with an Android-based operating system, offered over-the-air updates. While the system was comprehensive, the screen response was occasionally slow, and the instrument cluster graphics were plain.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC's interior was dominated by an 11.9-inch touchscreen with sharp graphics and quick responses. However, its lower placement on the dash made it more distracting to use. The MBUX infotainment system offered excellent voice recognition, though it interrupted audio playback. The system lacked physical buttons, making adjustments more challenging. Standard connectivity included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with an available Burmester 3D Surround Sound system for audio enthusiasts.

Safety

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer had not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA. Standard safety features included a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included intersection collision assist, driver-attention monitor, night vision, and traffic-sign recognition. The Active Lane Management System combined adaptive cruise control with automated lane centring, with a hands-free version planned for future release.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC had not yet been rated by the NHTSA or IIHS, but the previous GLC received high scores. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive headlights. The optional Intelligent Drive package added adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and other advanced features. The GLC Coupe included cross-traffic alerts and a surround-view camera as standard.
