2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But premium SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating city streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

2023 BMW X1 Reviews Summary

The all-new, third-generation X1 subcompact crossover is zippy and fun enough to be worthy of the distinction, but with new capability and plenty of cargo space, it’s bringing the utility, too.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

2023 BMW X1

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer presented a classic SUV aesthetic, sharing its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer. It featured traditional styling elements such as a tall hood, broad shoulders, and trapezoidal wheel arches. The Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a standard black roof, a unique hood, front fascia, and a forward-leaning grille with laser-etched knurling. The interior boasted high-end materials and convenience features, including 24-way power front seats with memory and massage functions, Nappa leather upholstery, and optional Palermo leather. The cabin also included aluminum and American Walnut wood trim, with seat controls placed high on the doors for a touch of luxury.

The 2023 BMW X1 evolved from its predecessor with a more robust and refined design. It featured a larger, squarer kidney grille and flush door handles, along with standard LED headlights and taillights. The exterior colour palette expanded to 13 options, including five new dynamic shades. The X1 offered 18-inch wheels as standard, with optional upgrades to 19-inch or 20-inch wheels. Inside, the cabin maintained a premium feel with the BMW Curved Display, SensaTec 2.0 seat coverings, and a sophisticated centre armrest. The M Sport Package added sport seats and an M leather steering wheel, while the Premium Essential Package included a panoramic moonroof and wireless device charging.

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine, delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, enabled the Grand Wagoneer to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in approximately six seconds. The vehicle featured a standard Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential. The Quadra-Lift air suspension system provided adjustable ride height, offering up to 25.4 cm of ground clearance. Despite its power, the Grand Wagoneer was best suited for a stately pace due to its size and weight.

The 2023 BMW X1 received a power boost with its 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder engine, producing 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This allowed the X1 to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and tow up to 1,587 kg. The new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission replaced the previous eight-speed automatic, enhancing the driving experience. The Adaptive M Suspension and damping systems improved comfort and stability, minimizing body roll. The X1's fuel economy was rated at 9.6 L/100 km in the city, 7.0 on the highway, and 8.4 combined, with Premium fuel recommended.

It provided more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. Cargo space was generous, with 775 litres behind all three rows and 2,007 litres with the third row stowed. The Grand Wagoneer had a maximum towing capacity of 4,472 kg. Standard features included a sunroof and four-zone automatic climate control, while the 360-degree camera system aided visibility.

The 2023 BMW X1's larger dimensions resulted in increased interior space, with impressive headroom of 1,069 mm in the front and 998 mm in the rear. It offered 1,026 mm of front-row legroom and 939 mm in the back. Cargo space was practical, with 727 litres behind the rear seats and 1,619 litres with them folded. Heated seats were part of the Premium Essential Package, which also included a heated steering wheel and wireless charging. The wireless charging pad featured a clever clasp to secure the phone during drives.

The 2023 BMW X1 introduced the BMW Curved Display with iDrive 8, integrating a 10.7-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch driver information display.
