Our test vehicle, adorned in Ebony Twilight metallic paint and equipped with a black leather interior, was loaded with various packages, including the Tech Package and Infotainment Package II, bringing the MSRP in Canada to $44,757. Despite the upscale appearance, the Terrain's interior materials and execution did not fully meet expectations, with some design choices, like the pushbutton transmission controls, proving less intuitive.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC90 showcased a significant evolution in design from its boxy predecessors. The XC90's purposeful yet understated front end, assertive grille, and distinctive "Thor’s Hammer" headlights marked a departure from the utilitarian aesthetics of earlier Volvos. Our test vehicle, in Ultimate trim with standard AWD, featured 21-inch wheels and a Platinum Grey paint with rich undertones. Inside, the XC90 exuded elegance with two-tone leather steering, metal Bowers and Wilkins speaker covers, and luxurious Nappa leather upholstery. The minimalist design, complemented by wood deco inlays, created a serene cabin environment, though the limited physical controls could be a source of frustration for some users.

The 2022 GMC Terrain was powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. While the engine's power was adequate, it required drivers to leverage the torque band effectively for a satisfying experience. The nine-speed automatic transmission performed well, maintaining the vehicle within the torque band. The Terrain's off-road capabilities were limited, with the AT4 model offering 20.1 centimetres of ground clearance, less than some competitors. The ride quality was generally smooth, though the sport-terrain tires contributed to road noise. Fuel economy was respectable, with a combined rating of 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres with AWD.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 introduced the B6 engine with mild-hybrid technology, producing 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain offered a smooth and efficient driving experience, with the mild-hybrid system enhancing fuel economy and reducing engine load. The XC90's eight-speed automatic transmission was responsive, and the vehicle handled well despite its size. The XC90's brakes provided a confident feel, and the cabin remained quiet thanks to effective insulation. While the XC90 lacked extensive off-road features, its simplicity in driving dynamics appealed to those seeking a straightforward driving experience.

The 2022 GMC Terrain offered a spacious interior with numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable and heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and dual-zone climate control. The AT4 trim featured perforated leather upholstery with caramel-colour stitching, adding an upscale touch. The rear seat provided ample legroom and support, and the cargo space was generous, with 838 litres behind the second row and 1,792 litres with the rear seats folded.

The 2023 Volvo XC90's interior was marked by Scandinavian minimalism, which, while elegant, resulted in limited storage space for smaller items. The second row was comfortable, but accessing the third row was challenging. The XC90 offered 356 litres of cargo space with the third row in use, expanding to 1,183 litres with the seats folded, and a maximum of 1,856 litres. Despite its smaller size compared to typical three-row SUVs, the XC90 provided a comfortable and refined driving experience.

The 2022 GMC Terrain featured two infotainment systems, with the higher trims offering an 8-inch touchscreen with connected navigation and a Bose premium sound system. The voice recognition system was highly effective, though the Bose speakers were less impressive. The Tech Package added useful features like a head-up display and a surround-view camera system.
