2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Reviews Summary

Electric vehicles have been kicking around for some time now. From the ill-fated General Motors EV1 to the early success of the Nissan Leaf and on to the meteoric rise of Tesla, we’ve had plenty of time to get used to EVs. But there’s never before been an zero-emission electric vehicle with as much mass appeal as the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning.

2022 Honda Ridgeline Reviews Summary

Honda isn’t known for pickup trucks, but that means it brings a different perspective to the genre. The 2022 Honda Ridgeline is like no other pickup on the market.

The Ridgeline isn’t just being different for the sake of being different, either. It uses the same unibody construction that gives crossover SUVs greater refinement than traditional models to offer increased comfort and better on-road handling than most pickups.

Since the Ridgeline’s debut, the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick have applied the unibody concept to smaller compact pickups, creating a new niche, but the Honda is a larger vehicle that competes with existing midsize pickups like the Ford Ranger, Jeep Gladiator, Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma, and Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon twins.

The Ridgeline debuted for the 2006 model year and the current second-generation version dates back to the 2017 model year. It got a facelift for 2021, so it carries over to 2022 essentially unchanged. In Canada, trim levels include the base Ridgeline Sport, midlevel EX-L and Touring, and the range-topping Black Edition, which is what we sampled for this review.

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning

8/10

2022 Honda Ridgeline

8/10

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, despite being a groundbreaking electric vehicle, maintained a familiar appearance akin to its gas-powered counterparts. It was available in three trims in Canada: XLT, Lariat, and Platinum, with the Pro grade reserved for fleet customers. The Lightning featured a crew cab and a 5.5-foot bed, distinguishing itself with a prominent LED headlight bar and a faux grille. Inside, the Lightning offered ample space, with front and rear legroom surpassing many two-row crossovers. The interior boasted quality materials and ergonomic design, with features like a panoramic sunroof and multiple power outlets enhancing its utility.

In contrast, the 2022 Honda Ridgeline was built on a unibody platform, offering increased rigidity and a more car-like feel. Its styling was conservative, with a snub nose and classic pickup rear view. The Ridgeline's interior was straightforward, with high-quality fit and finish. The Black Edition trim featured leather upholstery, heated seats, and a moonroof, though the piano black trim was prone to smudging. The Ridgeline's design prioritized practicality, with a focus on comfort and ease of use, making it a suitable choice for those seeking a reliable and comfortable truck experience.

Performance

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning

10/10

2022 Honda Ridgeline

7/10

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning was powered by dual electric motors, delivering 426 horsepower with the standard range battery and 563 horsepower with the extended range battery, along with a remarkable 775 lb-ft of torque. All models featured all-wheel drive, and the extended range battery offered a range of 515 kilometres. The Lightning's independent rear suspension and low centre of gravity contributed to its impressive handling, though its substantial weight limited its agility. Charging options included 120-volt and 240-volt outlets, with fast charging capabilities allowing for a quick recharge.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline, on the other hand, was equipped with a 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. It had a towing capacity of 2,267 kilograms and a payload capacity of up to 690 kilograms. The Ridgeline's unibody construction and independent suspension provided a smooth ride and precise handling, though its off-road capabilities were limited compared to traditional pickups. The V6 engine offered sufficient power, but the transmission's slow response detracted from the driving experience.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning featured a 5.5-foot bed with numerous tie-down points, and its standout feature was the 400-litre "Mega Power Frunk," offering additional storage space. The Lightning's Ford Intelligent Backup Power feature allowed it to serve as a backup generator, powering a household for up to three days. Its towing capacity reached 4,535 kilograms, with a payload capacity of 907 kilograms, though heavy loads could impact its driving range. Onboard scales helped manage payload weight, ensuring optimal performance.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline offered a 162.5-centimetre bed with a 207-litre lockable in-bed trunk, complete with a drain plug for easy cleaning. The Dual-Action Tailgate and in-bed audio system added to its versatility, while the bed's width accommodated 4-foot-wide sheets of plywood. Inside, the Ridgeline provided under-seat storage and a well-organized cabin with a pushbutton shifter, cupholders, and a wireless phone charger. Its spacious interior and practical design made it a comfortable choice for both passengers and cargo.
