2021 Volkswagen Atlas Reviews Summary

Introduced for the 2018 model year, the Volkswagen Atlas is the automaker's latest attempt to win over North American buyers. Built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the VW Atlas competes in the three-row crossover SUV segment against well-established nameplates like the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Highlander. Changes for 2021 are limited to exterior styling tweaks and a reshuffled option list. VW also offers the two-row Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.

2021 Honda Pilot Reviews Summary

It’s been seven years since Honda last redesigned the Pilot, the automaker’s popular midsize three-row crossover SUV. In most ways, age has been kind to it, but to love a 2021 Honda Pilot you must first live with one. Unlike some competitors, the styling is not a strong suit. Rather, it is the Pilot’s interior, powertrain, driving dynamics, and simple but useful technology that makes you appreciate it each and every day. Well, that, and the cheap lease payment.

Look and feel

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

6/10

2021 Honda Pilot

7/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas underwent a styling refresh that included new front and rear bumpers, standard LED headlights and taillights, and a new grille design. These changes added 6 centimetres to its length, giving it a more extroverted appearance compared to the previous model. The R-Line trim package further enhanced its sporty look with unique bumpers and side skirts. Despite these updates, the Atlas maintained its MQB platform, which is shared with other VW models like the Jetta and Golf. The interior followed a minimalist approach, with a standard seven-seat configuration and available second-row captain’s chairs on higher trims. However, the material quality was below average, with cheap-feeling plastics and faux wood and metal trim.

In contrast, the 2021 Honda Pilot aimed to balance rugged styling with practicality. Available in five trims, the Pilot offered standard all-wheel drive in Canada and a range of features across its lineup. The Black Edition trim, which we tested, came fully loaded with exclusive black leather upholstery and red accents. The Pilot's interior was spacious, with comfortable front seats and optional second-row captain’s chairs. However, the third-row seats were less comfortable for adults. The Pilot's design leaned towards a minivan-like feel, with quality materials throughout, although the exterior design was less appealing to some.

Performance

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

6/10

2021 Honda Pilot

8/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas offered two engine options: a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four producing 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.6-litre VR6 engine with 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard 4Motion all-wheel drive. The driving experience with the base engine was underwhelming, with adequate acceleration but rough shifts. The Atlas's handling was truck-like, and the ride quality was poor, with noticeable impacts from road imperfections. The VR6 models had a towing capacity of 2,267 kilograms, while the four-cylinder models were limited to 900 kilograms. Fuel efficiency was unimpressive, with the four-cylinder rated at 10.9 litres per 100 kilometres combined and the VR6 at 12.9 litres per 100 kilometres combined.

The 2021 Honda Pilot featured a 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and torque-vectoring all-wheel drive. The Pilot delivered a smooth and refined driving experience, with quick acceleration and athletic handling. Fuel-saving technologies like variable-cylinder management and automatic engine stop/start contributed to a combined fuel consumption rating of 11.0 litres per 100 kilometres. The Pilot's suspension provided a comfortable ride, and its steering and brakes were well-calibrated. However, its off-road capability was limited by modest ground clearance and approach angles.

Form and function

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

7/10

2021 Honda Pilot

9/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas offered average passenger and cargo space for its segment, with 2,741 litres of cargo space behind the front seats and 583 litres with all seats up. It provided more third-row legroom than most competitors but sacrificed second-row legroom. The second-row bench seat was uncomfortable, with thin cushions. The Atlas featured a user-friendly layout with controls within easy reach, up to five USB ports, and a wireless charging pad. It also boasted up to 17 cupholders. However, forward visibility was less than optimal, and parking assistance features were available on higher trims.

The 2021 Honda Pilot provided ample room for families, with seating for up to eight people. The front seats were comfortable and supportive, with power adjustments for the driver. Second-row captain’s chairs were available, offering comfort and sliding functionality for easier third-row access. The Pilot's interior featured numerous storage options, including a large centre console. Cargo space measured 524 litres behind the third row, expanding to 1,583 litres with the third row folded, and a maximum of 3,092 litres. Higher trims included a power tailgate with hands-free operation.

Technology

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

7/10

2021 Honda Pilot

5/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas came with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. The base model featured a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while higher trims had an 8-inch screen with satellite radio. The Digital Cockpit was available on higher trims, offering a 10.3-inch digital display. The infotainment system was user-friendly but lacked visual appeal. A 12-speaker Fender audio system was available on the Execline trim.

The 2021 Honda Pilot featured an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The EX-L Navi trim introduced a built-in navigation system, while the Touring trim added wireless phone charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 10-speaker premium audio system. The infotainment system was adequate but lacked a tuning knob, and voice recognition required specific prompts. The Touring trim also included a rear-seat entertainment system with various connectivity options.

Safety

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

2021 Honda Pilot

7/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas received top "good" ratings in IIHS crash tests, except for a "marginal" rating for child-seat anchors and mixed headlight ratings. The NHTSA gave the 2020 model a five-star overall rating. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring, with adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist available on higher trims. The Atlas was set to receive more advanced driver aids later in the model year.

The 2021 Honda Pilot came standard with Honda Sensing, which included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims added blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning. The Pilot received favourable crash-test ratings, with a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and "good" ratings from the IIHS, except for an "acceptable" score for front passenger small overlap frontal-impact protection.
