2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS vs 2022 GMC Terrain

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS, a continuation of the third generation introduced in 2020, was a luxurious SUV that offered a blend of elegance and practicality. Originally launched as the GL-Class in 2006, it was designed to replace the G-Class, but the latter's popularity ensured its survival. The GLS, with its three rows and plush interior, became a family-friendly alternative to the Navigator and Escalade. The transition from "GL" to "GLS" occurred during the second generation, marking a shift towards a more refined design. Despite its size, the GLS appeared less bulky than its predecessors, thanks to softened angles and clever design elements. Inside, the futuristic cabin was dominated by a massive digital screen, emphasizing the vehicle's tech-centric approach. The GLS was available in three trims: GLS 450, GLS 580, and the high-performance AMG GLS 63. Standard features on the GLS 450 included remote keyless entry, nine USB ports, dual-zone climate control, and a 13-speaker Burmester sound system. Various packages allowed for further customization, adding features like ventilated seats, surround-view cameras, and massaging functions.

In contrast, the 2022 GMC Terrain received updates to its front styling, wheel designs, and interior trim. The introduction of the AT4 trim level brought a bolder grille, black 17-inch alloy wheels, and sport-terrain tires, along with AT4 badges. The Terrain AT4 was marketed as a "small off-road SUV," equipped with a steel skid plate for protection. Our test model featured Ebony Twilight metallic paint, a black leather interior, and several packages, including the Tech Package and Infotainment Package II. The Terrain's interior was spacious for a compact crossover, with power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a heated steering wheel. The back seat offered ample legroom and support, while the cargo space measured 838 litres behind the second row, expanding to 1,792 litres with the seats folded. Despite its practicality, the Terrain's interior materials and design did not fully meet expectations for its price range.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a range of powerful engines, starting with the GLS 450's twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six, producing 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The GLS 580 featured a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, delivering 483 hp and 516 lb-ft. Both models used a nine-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes' 4MATIC AWD system. The AMG GLS 63, with its hand-crafted 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, generated an impressive 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with a nine-speed AMG twin-clutch automatic transmission, allowed the GLS 63 to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 280 km/h. The GLS 63's adaptive air suspension and multiple drive modes, including Comfort, Sport, and Sport+, provided a smooth and dynamic driving experience, with the ability to adjust ground clearance for different conditions.

In comparison, the 2022 GMC Terrain was powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The previously available 2.0-litre engine, which offered better acceleration and towing capacity, was no longer an option. The 1.5-litre engine, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, provided adequate performance, with torque available between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm. The Terrain AT4 featured FWD and AWD modes, along with Off-Road mode and Hill Descent Control. However, torque steer was noticeable in FWD mode. The Terrain's suspension offered a comfortable ride on pavement, but its off-road capabilities were limited by its ground clearance and tire grip. The Terrain's fuel economy was commendable, with a combined rating of 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres with AWD.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS boasted a spacious interior with three rows of seating, accommodating up to seven passengers. The first and second rows offered ample headroom and legroom, while the third row was suitable for adults. The GLS provided 355 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 1,209 litres with the third row folded, and 2,400 litres with both the second and third rows down. The power-folding third row and numerous storage compartments added to its practicality. The GLS's interior was luxurious, with features like massaging seats and a large centre console.

The 2022 GMC Terrain, while not as luxurious, offered a roomy interior for a compact crossover. The AT4 trim included power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The back seat provided generous legroom and support, with a rear USB charging port. The Terrain's cargo space measured 838 litres behind the second row, increasing to 1,792 litres with the seats folded. The interior featured numerous storage solutions, though some were not ideally sized. The Terrain's materials and design were functional but did not fully reflect its price point.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the MBUX infotainment system, with a large touch screen and a trackpad for navigation. The system included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though a USB-C cable was required for connectivity. The MBUX voice-control system responded to commands like "Hey Mercedes," offering functionality similar to Siri or Alexa. The digital dash extended to the instrument panel, with touch-sensitive pads on the steering wheel for control. The system required a learning curve but offered extensive technological capabilities.

The 2022 GMC Terrain offered two infotainment systems, with the SLT, AT4, and Denali trims featuring an 8-inch touchscreen. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM, and OnStar services. The Infotainment Package II added connected navigation, improved voice recognition, and a Bose audio system. The voice recognition system was highly effective, accurately responding to various prompts. The Terrain also offered a head-up display, park assist sensors, and a surround-view camera system, enhancing its technological offerings.
