2021 Mazda CX-30 Reviews Summary

Blurring the lines between mainstream and luxury brands, the new 2021 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo pairs effortless acceleration and engaging driving dynamics with a premium design and impressive technologies. Despite its substantial boost in power, this subcompact SUV isn’t about hardcore performance. Rather, it’s about delivering equal parts confidence, capability, style, and satisfaction, and at a price that stops where the traditional luxury brands are just getting started.

2022 Kia Sorento Reviews Summary

Kia completed a redesign on the popular Sorento last year. The big news for 2022 pertains to the arrival of the Sorento Hybrid in Canada—Kia Canada was waiting for the all-wheel-drive version to go into production before introducing it to our market—and the debut of the Sorento Plug-in Hybrid, which can travel 51 kilometres on electricity before switching to gas-electric hybrid propulsion and returning 3.0 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

Look and feel

2021 Mazda CX-30

7/10

2022 Kia Sorento

10/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 presented a bold aesthetic with its Turbo model, featuring exclusive shiny black 18-inch wheels, a shiny black grille, and side mirror housings, complemented by thick matte black body cladding. This design choice gave the vehicle a distinctive look, as if a black Sharpie had been used liberally before a more restrained approach was applied. Mazda's intention was to create a light and agile appearance, suggesting the body was floating over the wheels, a perception enhanced by the vehicle's elevated stance compared to the Mazda3 hatchback on which it was based.

Inside, the CX-30 offered a cabin reminiscent of the Mazda3, with quality materials and a sophisticated design. The interior featured stitched chocolate brown surfaces, chrome accents, and a standard frameless rearview mirror, contributing to an upscale vibe. The GT trim, where the turbocharged engine became available, included black or white leather as standard. Pricing for the 2021 CX-30 ranged from an MSRP of $24,700 to $36,400, with our test vehicle priced at $38,827, including fees.

The 2022 Kia Sorento, particularly in the X-Line trim, exuded a rugged and stylish presence. With features like rugged bumpers, matte-finish wheels, black lower body cladding, and robust roof rails, the Sorento was designed to stand out. Our test vehicle, in U.S. specification, showcased the X-Line package applied to the top trim, while in Canada, the X-Line was a standalone mid-grade package. All-wheel drive was standard across all Canadian Sorento models, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Pricing ranged from an MSRP of $34,595 to $48,085 for the gas-only powertrain, with hybrid options starting at $36,695.

Inside, the Sorento's cabin was a testament to quality, with leather upholstery and simulated wood trim. The attention to detail extended to the operation of door releases and the feel of the transmission shifter. The cabin's construction was solid, with no flimsy elements, and the design detail was impressive even in the most affordable models. The Sorento's interior style and traditional cable-operated transmission shifter did not compromise practical storage space, making it a compelling choice for those seeking a stylish and functional SUV.

Performance

2021 Mazda CX-30

7/10

2022 Kia Sorento

8/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo was equipped with a turbocharged Skyactiv 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, producing between 227 and 250 horsepower depending on the fuel's octane rating. Torque was impressive, measuring 310 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm or 320 lb-ft at 2,500 rpm, ensuring consistent acceleration at lower engine speeds. The CX-30 Turbo's fuel efficiency was rated at 9.3 L/100 km in combined driving, though our test averaged 9.6 L/100 km. With a 48-litre fuel tank, the driving range was approximately 500 kilometres. The vehicle's i-Activ AWD system and G-Vectoring Control Plus technology contributed to its dynamic performance, though the added height and weight compared to the Mazda3 made it less agile. The CX-30 Turbo's Off-Road mode and 5 cm of extra ground clearance enhanced its capability in dirt or snow.

The 2022 Kia Sorento offered a standard 191-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, but the turbocharged 2.5-litre engine was more appealing, delivering 281 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission, provided a lively driving experience, with a 0-60 mph time of about 7.5 seconds. The Sorento's suspension offered a balance of compliance and composure, making it feel more like a sports sedan than an SUV. Fuel consumption was rated at 9.9 L/100 km with the turbo engine, though our test averaged 11.4 L/100 km. The Sorento's driving dynamics and fuel efficiency made it a strong contender in its class.

Form and function

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo offered a comfortable and driver-focused interior, with eight-way manual adjustment for the driver's seat and heated front seats as standard. The cabin's design was spacious and minimalistic, with high-quality materials. However, the rear seat was cramped for adults, and the optional wireless smartphone charger was inconveniently located. Cargo space was 572 litres with the rear seats up and 1,280 litres with them folded, similar to the Mazda3 hatchback.

The 2022 Kia Sorento's interior felt luxurious, with Burgundy leather and heated and ventilated front seats. Second-row captain's chairs were standard from the EX trim, with features like cupholders, USB ports, and rear climate control vents. The third-row seat was less accommodating for adults, with limited legroom and headroom. Cargo space was 357 litres with all seats up, expanding to 1,274 litres with the third row folded and 2,139 litres with the second row down. The Sorento's smart power tailgate added convenience for loading cargo.

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo featured an 8.8-inch infotainment display operated via physical controls and voice commands. While the system required acclimation, it offered standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The GT trim added SiriusXM, navigation, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system. The Active Driving Display projected useful data onto the windshield, enhancing safety and convenience.

The 2022 Kia Sorento offered an 8-inch touchscreen on lower trims and a 10.25-inch display with navigation and Kia Connect services on higher trims. The infotainment system was intuitive, though the voice recognition was less effective than Hyundai's. A 12-speaker Bose audio system was exclusive to the SX trim, and a wireless phone charger was standard from the LX Premium trim.
