2021 Lincoln Navigator Reviews Summary

Full-size SUVs like the Lincoln Navigator represent the smallest slice of the luxury SUV market. They're the heaviest, hugest, and fanciest people movers sold by mainstream automakers—and you can count them all on two hands. The Navigator, a popular nameplate since 1998, was redesigned in dramatic fashion for 2018. In its fourth model year, this Navigator still delights us as we test newer competitors costing at or above its $97,000 starting price. Foreign nameplates offer no equal to the Navigator, and it's not for sheer size or a desire to lift up Lincoln that we say this is one of the best American vehicles, among both trucks and cars, ever made.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Reviews Summary

Jeep is now a luxury brand. That's why the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L mid-size SUV can ask, with a straight face, that you pay $75,000 or more for the privilege of ownership. A $60,000 Wrangler or a $100,000 Grand Wagoneer doesn't seem snooty, while a Mercedes-Benz or a Lexus sure does. Jeep's heritage as a hardcore 4x4 brand and its newer image as a bougie city truck maker can coexist. We drove a Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve to prove it.

2021 Lincoln Navigator

9/10

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator was a departure from its predecessors, which often resembled dressed-up Ford Expeditions. While it shared some structural elements with the Expedition, such as side glass and overall footprint, the Navigator distinguished itself with unique design features, including a distinct turn signal stalk. Its elegance and understated styling were impressive, especially for a vehicle of its size, riding on 22-inch wheels. The Pristine White model, with its monochromatic package, black wheels, and illuminated Lincoln logo, was particularly striking. Inside, the Navigator offered a modern and muted interior with seven colour palettes, including the Slate Gray of the test model. The wood trim, push-button gear selector, and floating centre console added to its refined appeal. The Perfect Position seats, adjustable in 30 different ways, provided exceptional comfort, making the Navigator a standout in its class.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, introduced as an all-new model, was 29 centimetres longer than the standard two-row Grand Cherokee, accommodating third-row seats. Its design was elegant and unmistakably Jeep, with a seven-slot rectangular grille, U-shaped wheel arches, and a blunt front end. The lighting was modernized, and the paint finish and panel fit were improved. The interior was luxurious, with dual high-resolution screens, real wood, aluminum, and Palermo leather seating. The Grand Cherokee L's interior layout and tactile quality were reminiscent of a Mercedes, offering a premium feel. The vehicle's spaciousness was notable, with ample room in all rows, and the optional air suspension provided a comfortable ride. The Grand Cherokee L's design and features made it a compelling choice for those seeking a blend of luxury and practicality.

Performance

2021 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

7/10

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator was powered by a remarkable twin-turbo V6 engine, borrowed from the Ford Raptor, delivering 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive in Canada, provided impressive acceleration and a satisfying engine note. The Navigator's towing capacity was substantial at 3,765 kilograms, making it a capable choice for hauling. However, its fuel efficiency was less impressive, with a combined rating of 13.8 litres per 100 kilometres. The suspension, while equipped with adaptive dampers, felt less refined compared to competitors like the Cadillac Escalade. Despite some shortcomings in ride quality and steering precision, the Navigator excelled in highway refinement and power delivery, offering a plush and powerful driving experience.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered two engine options: a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and a 5.7-litre V8, both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The V6, producing 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, felt underpowered for the vehicle's size, especially when fully loaded. The V8, available on higher trims, provided a more satisfying 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. The Grand Cherokee L's fuel efficiency was decent with the V6, but the V8 was notably thirstier. The vehicle's chassis was a highlight, offering excellent ride composure and steering feel. The optional air suspension provided adjustable ride heights and improved handling. The Grand Cherokee L's off-road capabilities were commendable, with various driving modes and a Trail-Rated badge on the Overland trim. Overall, the Grand Cherokee L offered a well-rounded performance package, with the V8 being the preferred choice for power.

Form and function

2021 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

7/10

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator offered a spacious interior, akin to a small bedroom, with ample room for six adults. While technically a seven-passenger SUV, the third row's middle seat was best suited for children. The Navigator's boxy shape contributed to its generous cargo space, with 546 litres behind the third row, 1,627 litres behind the second, and a total of 2,925 litres. The long-wheelbase Navigator L provided even more storage capacity. The vehicle featured heated rear second-row seats and a three-zone climate system, although it lacked some advanced features found in German competitors. The front seats were exceptionally comfortable, with numerous adjustments and massage programs. Visibility was excellent, but parking was challenging due to the vehicle's size.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L featured the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, known for its simplicity and straightforward graphics. The system included physical switches for climate and stereo controls, providing ease of use. The Grand Cherokee L offered ample space in all rows, with the third row accommodating average adults comfortably. The vehicle's panoramic roof, large windows, and USB ports enhanced the travel experience. However, the air vents were insufficient, requiring the fan to be kept on high, which was noisy. The Grand Cherokee L's interior was well-designed, with a focus on practicality and comfort.

Technology

2021 Lincoln Navigator

7/10

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator's technology felt somewhat dated, with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system that lacked the advanced features of competitors like the Cadillac Escalade. While the system was intuitive and shared its interface with Ford vehicles, it couldn't wirelessly connect to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The 20-speaker Revel Ultima audio system was good but not exceptional. The Navigator offered wireless device charging and a rear entertainment system with Roku media streaming. Despite some limitations, the Navigator's technology was user-friendly and straightforward.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered a range of advanced technology features, especially on upper trims. These included multiple massage modes for the front seats, a head-up display, night vision, and an Active Driving Assist system. The navigation system integrated with the instrument panel, providing a clear view of upcoming turns. The Uconnect system supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with the ability to connect two phones simultaneously. The Grand Cherokee L also featured adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and other driver aids. The Summit Reserve trim included a 19-speaker McIntosh audio system, offering a premium audio experience.

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator received a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with four stars for rollover resistance. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety had not rated the Navigator. The vehicle offered standard safety features like automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring. Optional features included inflatable rear seat belts for the second row, a rare safety feature aimed at reducing chest injuries.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L had not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Standard safety features included driver and passenger knee airbags, trailer sway control, and various driver aids. The Grand Cherokee L offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, enhancing its appeal as a family vehicle.
