2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Reviews Summary

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L is the three-row version of Jeep's popular midsize SUV. It continues into 2023 with higher prices and new competitors, namely the Land Rover Defender 130 and Toyota Grand Highlander. The style and 4x4 hardware are classic Jeep, but the Grand Cherokee L is built for comfort over raw capability. We tested the top trim, a Summit Reserve, which is priced at roughly $85,000 in Canada and worth it—most of the time.

Look and feel

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX retained a design that was reminiscent of its first-generation model from 2002, with the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights being the most notable updates. Inside, the cabin was crafted with the high-quality materials and refinement that Lexus was known for, providing a quiet and comfortable environment. Despite its dated appearance, the GX offered a sense of luxury with its smooth finishes and attention to detail, although the interior design themes remained largely unchanged from earlier models.

In contrast, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L presented a more modern and bold aesthetic. The High Altitude package added a sleek, blacked-out look with dark grey 21-inch wheels and black leather with gold stitching. The interior of the upper trims was impressive, with features like a polished black dash and diamond-patterned stitching. While not every material was of the highest quality, the overall feel was upscale, and the Grand Cherokee L offered a more contemporary and luxurious experience compared to the Lexus GX.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

6/10

The 2022 Lexus GX was powered by a 4.6-litre V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Despite its hefty curb weight of 2,325 kilograms, the GX managed a 0-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds. Its full-time 4WD system and Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) contributed to its off-road capabilities, although the high drag coefficient and fuel consumption of 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres were drawbacks. The GX was more capable off-road than many rivals, but its slow steering and touchy brakes were less appealing.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered a standard 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine with 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, which was considered underwhelming for its size. An optional 5.7-litre Hemi V8 engine provided 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, significantly improving towing capacity and performance. The Grand Cherokee L's chassis and air suspension delivered confident handling and a comfortable ride, with multiple 4WD systems available for different trims. Fuel economy varied, with the V6 achieving 11.3 litres per 100 kilometres combined, while the V8 was less efficient at 14.1 litres per 100 kilometres.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position and comfortable seating, but its narrow width and short length made rear seat access challenging. The third-row seat was cramped and reduced cargo space, with a maximum of 1,833 litres available with seats folded. The side-swinging tailgate was cumbersome, especially in tight spaces, and the overall design felt outdated compared to more modern SUVs.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L benefited from its extended wheelbase, providing ample legroom for second-row passengers and a spacious interior. The third row was best suited for children, but the power-folding seats and power liftgate added convenience. Cargo space was generous, with up to 2,407 litres available with seats folded, making it one of the most spacious in its class. The Grand Cherokee L's interior layout and features were more user-friendly and modern than the Lexus GX.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation. While the system was an improvement, the placement of stereo controls below off-roading knobs was awkward. The GX offered basic technology features, with standard parking sensors and optional surround-view cameras, but lacked the advanced tech found in newer models.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L came equipped with Uconnect 5, offering an 8.4-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen depending on the trim. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with navigation standard on higher trims. Advanced features like night vision, Active Driving Assist, and a passenger screen added to the tech appeal. The Grand Cherokee L's technology offerings were more comprehensive and modern compared to the Lexus GX.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings but included Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and other basic safety features. However, it missed some advanced safety technologies found in competitors, which might appeal to those preferring fewer driving aids.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS for models built after May 2023 and scored well in NHTSA tests. It offered a range of standard safety features, including forward emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring, with additional options like night vision and 360-degree cameras on higher trims. The Grand Cherokee L provided a more comprehensive safety package than the Lexus GX.
