2021 Jeep Gladiator Reviews Summary

Say what you will about the Wrangler-based Jeep Gladiator, which elicits strong opinions both for and against it. One thing is certain: you can’t have this much fun working or playing while driving any other mid-size pickup truck. From its removable top and doors to its extensive list of aftermarket accessories, the Gladiator offers a combination of practicality, personalization, and promise of adventure like no other truck does. And for the 2021 model year, the good times continue to roll, with a new turbo-diesel engine option and available full-time four-wheel drive.

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Reviews Summary

When discussing heavy-duty pickups, it's easy to fixate on maximum towing and hauling capacities as the only things that matter. After all, the primary purpose of heavy-duty trucks is to carry and pull the heaviest loads possible. But with more consumers using these big trucks for work and play, there are other things to consider, like off-road ability, design, infotainment, trailering technology, and safety. That's a good thing for the GMC Sierra 2500HD.

2021 Jeep Gladiator

9/10

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

7/10

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator was a unique creation, derived from the Wrangler but extended and reinforced for enhanced towing and hauling capabilities. Its design included a short 5-foot cargo bed, maintaining a balance between utility and off-road prowess. Initially, its appearance seemed unconventional, with its tall, long, and narrow build, but it quickly grew on those who experienced its driving dynamics, especially in adventurous terrains. The Gladiator's new Willys grade introduced a blacked-out grille and other rugged features, while the High Altitude model added luxury touches like Nappa leather and body-colour detailing. Pricing for the Gladiator started at $49,315, but our test model, equipped with the Overland trim and a turbo-diesel engine, reached $77,475. Inside, the Gladiator's cabin mirrored the Wrangler's, focusing on durability and utility, with Jeep's signature Easter eggs adding a sense of exclusivity.

In contrast, the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD boasted a bold exterior with a commanding presence, thanks to its tall hood and massive grille. While its design was subjective, it was considered one of the more attractive heavy-duty trucks. Inside, the Sierra's cabin was functional but fell short in material quality compared to competitors like Ram and Ford. The Sierra 2500HD offered five trim levels, each with distinct features, and was available in various cab and bed configurations. Our test vehicle, the off-road-focused AT4 trim, featured rugged design elements and a luxurious interior with Jet Black and Kalahari upholstery, heated and ventilated leather seats, and a premium infotainment system. The AT4 trim was a well-rounded package, combining off-road capability with upscale amenities.

Performance

2021 Jeep Gladiator

8/10

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

8/10

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator introduced a new 3.0-litre EcoDiesel turbo-diesel V6 engine, offering 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. This engine option, priced at $9,190 in Canada, provided substantial low-end power and improved fuel efficiency compared to the standard 3.6-litre Pentastar gasoline V6. During testing, the diesel engine averaged 10.4 litres per 100 kilometres, slightly above the estimated 9.8 L/100 km. The Gladiator Sport S could tow up to 3,469 kilograms with the standard engine, while the diesel's towing capacity ranged from 2,720 to 2,948 kilograms due to cooling restrictions. Despite not towing or hauling, the diesel-powered Gladiator excelled in off-road conditions, thanks to its torque and Selec-Speed off-road cruise control system. However, the Gladiator's driving experience included slow steering, a stiff ride, and wind noise, which added to its rugged charm.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD, equipped with a 6.6-litre Duramax diesel engine and an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, delivered 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. While not the most powerful in its class, the Sierra's powertrain was highly capable. The truck's maximum payload capacity was 1,637 kilograms, and it could tow up to 8,391 kilograms. The Duramax engine provided abundant power, requiring firm braking when shifting out of Park. The Sierra 2500HD felt quick for its size, with smooth shifts from the Allison transmission. However, the ride was jittery when unladen, improving with added weight. The AT4 trim's off-road equipment, including an automatic-locking rear differential and X31 off-road suspension, made it a competent off-roader, though a slight steering column vibration was noted during off-road testing.

Form and function

2021 Jeep Gladiator

7/10

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

9/10

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator prioritized utility over comfort, with agreeable seats but cramped interior dimensions. Small door openings, snug seating positions, and limited rear legroom required adjustment. Side steps or rails, while preserving breakover angle, made entry and exit challenging. In-cabin storage included netting, a small centre console bin, and a locking storage bin under the rear seat. The Gladiator's 1,531 mm cargo box held 1,005 litres and featured an adjustable tailgate for accommodating plywood sheets. Payload ratings varied from 487 to 696 kilograms, depending on the configuration.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD offered three cab configurations, two bed lengths, and ample passenger space. Seating up to six, the Sierra provided generous headroom, legroom, and hip room. Entry required effort due to its height, but side assist steps aided traction. Inside, the Sierra featured a wide centre console, dual glove boxes, and hidden rear seat storage. A 120-volt power outlet and USB ports added convenience. The MultiPro tailgate, standard on SLE and above, offered six functions for improved cargo access, and a rear power outlet facilitated outdoor work.

Technology

2021 Jeep Gladiator

7/10

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

8/10

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator combined old-school charm with modern technology. The Uconnect 4 system with a 7-inch touchscreen was standard, offering Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The High Country trim featured the Uconnect 4C system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen and navigation. While user-friendly, the system's aging technology resulted in slow response times. The forward-facing Trail Cam, available on the Rubicon trim, aided off-road navigation.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD offered a range of infotainment systems, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on SLT and above. A navigation system was standard on Denali and available on SLT and AT4 trims. The Bose premium audio system provided rich sound, though the voice-recognition system occasionally misinterpreted commands. The Sierra's 15 camera views, including a "transparent trailer" view, enhanced towing and visibility. The rear camera mirror offered a clear view, even with a full cabin.

Safety

2021 Jeep Gladiator

7/10

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

8/10

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator's standard safety features included a reversing camera, with optional upgrades like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring. Our test truck had all these features, with adaptive cruise control performing well on the freeway. The NHTSA rated the Gladiator with a four-star frontal-impact rating and a three-star rollover resistance rating.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD offered advanced safety features, including automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. The Teen Driver system allowed parents to monitor their teen's driving habits. The Sierra's mass provided safety in collisions but posed risks to smaller vehicles and pedestrians. The truck's numerous camera views were essential for safety. Due to its high GVWR, the Sierra 2500HD was not rated by the NHTSA or IIHS.
