2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Reviews Summary

Brand loyalty runs rampant among truck owners, explaining how the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado has retained its strong sales figures despite the arguable need for improvement. Well, that, and big, juicy rebates to keep ‘em moving off dealership lots. This is a fundamentally sound truck, but it needs greater attention to the details. Perhaps that will happen with a rumored makeover for the 2022 model year.

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Reviews Summary

When discussing heavy-duty pickups, it's easy to fixate on maximum towing and hauling capacities as the only things that matter. After all, the primary purpose of heavy-duty trucks is to carry and pull the heaviest loads possible. But with more consumers using these big trucks for work and play, there are other things to consider, like off-road ability, design, infotainment, trailering technology, and safety. That's a good thing for the GMC Sierra 2500HD.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

6/10

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

7/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was a versatile truck, offering three cab styles, three bed lengths, and eight trim levels, each with a unique appearance. It came with six engine options paired with various automatic transmissions, and while rear-wheel drive was standard, four-wheel drive was available. Our test model featured a crew cab, short bed, and LTZ trim, equipped with a 3.0-litre inline-six Duramax turbodiesel engine. The truck's exterior was striking, with Northsky Blue paint, chrome trim, and 20-inch polished aluminum wheels. However, the interior was less impressive, with outdated design elements and a lack of finesse, despite silver accent trim and some modern features.

In contrast, the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD boasted a bold exterior design with a tall hood, squared-off lines, and a massive grille, giving it a commanding presence. Inside, the Sierra HD's interior was functional but fell short in material quality compared to competitors. The truck was available in five trim levels, with the AT4 trim focusing on off-road capabilities. Our test vehicle featured black chrome accents, C-shaped LED lighting, and a premium interior with Jet Black and Kalahari upholstery. The AT4 trim offered a rugged yet luxurious package, appealing to those seeking a capable off-roader.

Performance

7/10

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

8/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offered a range of engine options, with the 6.2-litre Ecotec3 V8 providing maximum towing capability and a satisfying rumble. However, the Duramax turbodiesel was a standout choice, offering 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque at lower revs. It was fuel-efficient, achieving 9.6 L/100 km in combined driving, and paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Duramax's towing capacity was 4,309 kilograms, while the Silverado's maximum capabilities reached 6,033 kilograms with the 6.2-litre V8. The Z71 Off-Road Package was recommended for improved suspension performance.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD featured a 6.6-litre V8 engine, with the optional Duramax diesel providing 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. The Allison 10-speed automatic transmission complemented the engine's power, making the truck capable but not the most powerful in its class. The Sierra 2500HD's maximum trailering weight was 8,391 kilograms, and it offered a smooth ride with the AT4's off-road equipment. The truck handled off-road terrain with ease, thanks to features like the automatic-locking rear differential and X31 off-road suspension.

Form and function

9/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab offered a spacious interior with wide, supportive front seats and ample rear seat space. The truck had plenty of storage, including dual dashboard glove compartments and rear seatback storage. However, the interior lacked innovation, and the optional power running boards were missed. The Silverado's cargo bed was deep and roomy, with useful features like the CornerStep rear bumper and optional Multi-Flex tailgate.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD provided abundant passenger space in both the front and rear seats, accommodating up to six passengers. The AT4 package added extra lift, making entry a bit challenging, but the side assist step aided traction. The truck's interior featured a wide centre console, dual glove boxes, and hidden rear seat storage. The Sierra 2500HD offered convenience features like a 120-volt power outlet and GMC's MultiPro tailgate, enhancing its functionality.

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500's infotainment system featured a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen, with quick loading times and modern graphics. The LTZ trim offered a fully-featured system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM, and a Bose premium sound system. The Silverado also had a head-up display and multiple camera views for towing and visibility.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD offered a range of infotainment systems, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard on higher trims. The Bose premium audio system provided rich sound, while the voice-recognition system had some quirks. The Sierra's 15 camera views, including the "transparent trailer" view, made towing easier. The rear camera mirror provided a clear view, even with a full cabin.

Safety

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

8/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 had a "Marginal" rating from the IIHS for front passenger protection and a four-star overall rating from the NHTSA. It offered safety features like forward collision alert, pedestrian detection, and blind-spot monitoring. However, it lacked advanced features like stop-and-go adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD offered a range of safety features, including automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. The Teen Driver system was standard, and the truck's mass provided some safety benefits. However, its high GVWR meant it wasn't rated by the NHTSA or IIHS. The Sierra's numerous camera views enhanced safety, making it a recommended choice for peace of mind.
