2021 Chevrolet Blazer Reviews Summary

In its third model year, the Chevrolet Blazer is a rarer sight on the road. That's because two other popular Chevy crossovers bookend the Blazer. The Equinox is a lot cheaper and holds just as much cargo, while the Traverse has a third row, the same powertrain, and costs the same. If you're into the Blazer, you're paying a premium for style and handling. High prices and a substandard interior keep the Blazer rare—which aren't positive traits when buying new.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But luxury SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating New York City streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

Look and feel

2021 Chevrolet Blazer

6/10

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer was a striking vehicle that often drew comparisons to high-end models like the Lamborghini Urus. Its aggressive styling, characterized by a wedgy profile, slim-cut windows, and a bold front end with thin lights and a tall, black grille, made it stand out. The Blazer's design was a departure from Chevy's typically utilitarian SUVs, borrowing elements from the Camaro to create a more exciting and memorable appearance. However, the interior did not match the exterior's flair, with a low-rent feel and materials that seemed below the price point, especially when compared to competitors offering more luxurious interiors at similar or lower prices.

In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer offered a more traditional SUV styling with a tall hood, broad shoulders, and an upright profile. It differentiated itself from the standard Wagoneer with a black roof, model-specific hood, and a forward-leaning grille with laser-etched knurling. The Grand Wagoneer boasted a high-end interior with features like 24-way power front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, and American Walnut wood trim. The cabin was quiet and comfortable, although the vehicle's size made it feel ungainly at higher speeds. Despite its luxury, the Grand Wagoneer was designed for a stately pace rather than sporty driving.

Performance

2021 Chevrolet Blazer

7/10

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

6/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer offered three engine options, with the 3.6-liter V6 on the RS trim being the most preferred, delivering 308 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. This engine provided a strong performance, complemented by a sport-tuned suspension and a mechanical torque-vectoring rear axle. However, the transmission calibration had issues, particularly in Sport mode, where it was slow to respond and lacked paddle shifters for manual control. The Blazer's fuel economy was average, with the AWD V6 achieving 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer came with a powerful 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine, producing 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, allowed the Grand Wagoneer to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in six seconds. The vehicle featured a standard Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system and a Quadra-Lift air suspension system, enhancing its off-road capabilities. Despite its power, the Grand Wagoneer was best driven at a leisurely pace due to its size and bouncy ride at higher speeds.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

8/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer, as a two-row SUV, comfortably seated four passengers. Its low roof height did not compromise interior space, and the seats were mounted lower for easy entry and exit. However, visibility was a challenge due to poor sightlines, although large side-view mirrors and optional rear-view camera systems helped mitigate this issue. The Blazer offered 64 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and had a towing capacity of up to 4,500 pounds with the right configuration.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer offered seating for seven or eight, depending on the configuration, with ample third-row headroom and second-row legroom. It provided 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place and 70.9 cubic feet with the third row stowed. The Grand Wagoneer had a maximum towing capacity of 9,850 pounds, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its extra weight. Standard features included a sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, and large storage bins.

Technology

The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer featured an 8-inch touchscreen with Chevrolet Infotainment 3, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The RS trim added wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control, and a Safety Alert Seat. The infotainment system included a "Plus" version with navigation, 4G WiFi, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. Driver assists were standard on most trims, but the Blazer lacked semi-automated driving functions.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer boasted a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, and a McIntosh audio system. It supported wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and had a 4G-LTE WiFi hotspot. The Grand Wagoneer featured a second screen for seat massagers and an optional rear-seat entertainment system. It used the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, which offered over-the-air updates and Amazon Alexa connectivity.

The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer received an overall five-star rating from the NHTSA and top "Good" ratings from the IIHS in crash tests. However, it received "Marginal" and "Poor" ratings for headlights. Standard safety features included a driver's knee airbag and enhanced forward emergency braking on top trims.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer had not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA. It came with standard safety features like a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Optional features included a driver-attention monitor and night vision. Active Driving Assist was available, combining adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering.
