2020 Acura TLX Reviews Summary

More than Infiniti and Lexus, Acura has consistently positioned itself as the Japanese luxury brand for driving enthusiasts. But for a while, some of the company's successful products were anything but fun to drive. However, when equipped with Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), the TL sedan, and since 2015, the TLX that replaced it, have always shown people a good time—particularly those who prefer to take the road less traveled. But that doesn’t mean the 2020 Acura TLX sport sedan is flawless. Far from it, actually.

2021 Nissan Sentra Reviews Summary

Following a makeover for the 2020 model year, the Nissan Sentra has ripened into a prime specimen of the compact sedan genre. With competitive safety, technology, and fuel efficiency now supplemented by an attractive exterior and interior design, the Sentra no longer feels like a compromise—it feels like a smart choice.

Look and feel

2020 Acura TLX

6/10

2021 Nissan Sentra

7/10

The 2020 Acura TLX, with its refreshed grille and nose, presented a more appealing design compared to its predecessors. Despite its somewhat anonymous appearance, the A-Spec option package added a sporty flair with enhancements like 19-inch wheels and revised bumper designs. The TLX was available at a starting MSRP of $37,490, excluding fees, but upgrading to the SH-AWD with Technology and A-Spec packages offered a more attractive and feature-rich vehicle for under $50,000.

In contrast, the 2021 Nissan Sentra showcased a bold and athletic exterior, a significant departure from its earlier, more conservative designs. The Sentra's V-Motion grille and expressive headlights contributed to its modern look, while a variety of paint options, including two-tone schemes, allowed for personalization. The Sentra's design was further enhanced by its muscular wheel arches and available alloy wheels, giving it an agile and fun appearance.

Performance

2020 Acura TLX

9/10

2021 Nissan Sentra

6/10

The 2020 Acura TLX offered two powertrain options: a 206-horsepower, 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with front-wheel drive and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and a more powerful 290-horsepower, 3.5-litre V6 engine with the SH-AWD system and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The V6 engine provided a smooth build-up of power, especially in Sport or Sport+ mode, where the TLX transformed into a thrilling ride. The SH-AWD system enhanced driving dynamics by distributing up to 70% of engine output to a single rear wheel, making the TLX agile and responsive. Despite its performance capabilities, the TLX maintained a comfortable and quiet ride, with fuel consumption of 10.2 litres per 100 kilometres during testing.

The 2021 Nissan Sentra featured a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 149 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a front-wheel-drive system and an Xtronic CVT, the Sentra delivered adequate performance for daily commuting. The Sentra's lightweight design contributed to its efficiency, with fuel consumption figures of 8.0 litres per 100 kilometres city and 6.0 highway for S and SV models. The Sentra's driving experience was enhanced by its well-tuned CVT, independent suspension, and dual-pinion electric steering, providing tidy road manners and enjoyable cornering.

Form and function

2020 Acura TLX

2021 Nissan Sentra

7/10

The 2020 Acura TLX excelled in providing a luxurious and comfortable interior. High-quality materials, heated and ventilated front seats, and ample space greeted the driver and front passenger. Rear-seat occupants also enjoyed generous legroom and available heated cushions. However, the TLX's trunk space was limited to 405 litres, more akin to a compact car than a midsize sedan.

The 2021 Nissan Sentra offered a well-organized interior with user-friendly features. The infotainment touchscreen was conveniently positioned, and controls were logically arranged. The Sentra's Zero Gravity front seats provided exceptional comfort, making long journeys more tolerable. Heated front seats were standard, and the SR Premium grade included additional features like a power-adjustable driver's seat and a moonroof. The Sentra's interior was practical, with ample storage options and thoughtful connectivity features.

Technology

2/10

2021 Nissan Sentra

7/10

The 2020 Acura TLX's infotainment system was a point of contention, with its dual-screen setup causing frustration. The top display was not a touchscreen, while the bottom one was, leading to confusion and distraction. Despite these issues, the TLX offered a premium audio system, smartphone connectivity, and an optional navigation system.

In contrast, the 2021 Nissan Sentra provided a straightforward and effective infotainment system. Standard features included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth audio, and a hands-free text-messaging assistant. The SV and SR models featured an 8-inch touchscreen, while the SR Premium offered a premium Bose audio system. Although navigation was not available, smartphone integration allowed for easy access to navigation apps.

Safety

2020 Acura TLX

7/10

2021 Nissan Sentra

8/10

The 2020 Acura TLX, while equipped with standard safety features like adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking, showed its age in crash-test ratings. It received 5-star ratings from the NHTSA but did not qualify for a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS due to an Acceptable rating in the small overlap frontal-impact test.

The 2021 Nissan Sentra boasted a comprehensive suite of safety features, including Nissan's advanced airbag system, a tire pressure monitoring system with Easy-Fill Tire Alert, and Nissan Safety Shield 360. The Sentra received a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS, highlighting its strong safety credentials.
