Like the low cost to maintain, visibility, sport style, acceleration, fits 5 comfortably, has ample cargo room, reliable engine, moon roof, good sound system. Has overdrive. Breaks really well.
Little bit noisy on the freeway, the seats can be more comfortable.Oct 12, 2014

This car is a blast to drive! truly a perfect daily driver for anyone on a budget. The car is sporty too as it comes from the factory with a sporty stance. The car really can move if you give it gas. All shifts are smooth as well, anyone can drive this car it is super easy to drive. Oct 10, 2013

I will purchase another Mazda since driving this car. I have had the same size Nissan and prefer this over that brand of vehicle. I have spent very little on maintenance. It uses synthetic oil. I am the second owner and have taken very good care of my little gem.Jul 25, 2013

It's a good car to have going from point A to point B and easy to handle.
I would recommend this car for in the city driving rather than a long trip because of the high RPMS. This car runs 3100 RPMS when driving at 70 miles an hourJan 14, 2013

The car had pretty decent power, and was easy on the eyes. It was fun to drive - tarnished just a bit by high engine noise levels. Maintenance costs were in line of what to expect - the only superfluous breakdown was a failed thermostat. It had comfortable seating and was a fair family car even for taller people. Fuel economy was a bit disappointing. I picked it up at a lowish price because it was a base model, but after three years of use, got $500 less than I paid for it from the insurance company after it was totaled. Not bad!Oct 30, 2012

Needs more power. Good thing we added a few things. CIA was added for
performance as well as an engine remapping. It didn't cost us anything to run but

Mazda had hit the nail right on the head. Cruise control, sunroof, automatic everything, in a compact saloon! A little underpowered, the 4-cylinder, but great revs. I survived a 50 mph crash in the thing, and got out with only a broken rib. Great car.Aug 13, 2012

I have the 2.0 liter 5-speed, so it has some pep for a little car. It has drum brakes
in the rear, and I wish it had 4-wheel disc brakes. I drive it fairly conservatively so
the brakes last almost a year between brake jobs. It has handled pretty nicely
until recently. It is in need of new struts, but it has 135,000 miles on it. The
interior and exterior are fairly basic, but not boring. It gets excellent gas mileage,
34 mph on the highway and 30 in town. The cost of maintenance is not terrible.

It's been an all 'round good car. Put it through it's paces more than once and she's always been reliable. Mazda does make a good car and it's always been a pleasure to drive. Would definetly buy another Mazda in the futureNov 14, 2010

-Performance= it can drive on ice, snow, and bumpy roads, but it falls apart easy.
-Build Quality= It has needed repairs and is getting another soon.
-Appearance=My opinion is that it is too wide and needs to be thinner .
-Get 30 to the gallon if well-maintained

Proteges are badass, what can I say. Handling is great, amazing steering feel, could use more power-ok with manual, gas mileage is great, very reliable. overall, a fun and sensible car to own. would definitely buy it all over again.Apr 07, 2010

The best part of my car is the way it handles! It is easily one of the most enjoyable small cars in terms of handling and performance. It get's great fuel mileage, stands up well to daily driving, and it looks good in the process!Jul 19, 2009

Gets the job done. Started having issues after 100k. Broken idler pully, brake caliper in the last ~2000 mi (at 108k now).
Doesn't like powershifting. Shift forks are the tranny weak-spot and cost ~$1250 to replace if you have excellent connections.
Engine still runs strong, gets around in the winter with snow tires.

This car isn't the most exciting of vehicles yet has great performance for a
sedan. It looks fairly sporty and drives wonderfully. The Protege is a very
practical car, getting good gas mileage and having adequate room for four
people plus their things, yet it holds its own when you want to be a little sporty.
A very good car for every day use, or just to go out and enjoy a drive.
Overall, it is very low cost for maintaining the vehicle. Especially with an
average 30 MPG. I've had a few things that have needed to be replaced, but
nothing more then what you'd expect with maintaining a vehicle. I'd definitely
say this is a good one and lives up to Mazda's fun and "Zoom-Zoom" nature.Feb 04, 2009

Pas grand chose à redire!
Performances et tenue de route très acceptables.
Aurait juste besoin de quelques chevaux supplémentaires...
Intérieur attrayant, sans exagération.
Chassis solide (pour l'avoir mis à l'épreuve...)
Le fun à conduire, bonne consommation (28-30 mpg avg.) et risques de vandalisme faibles (était construit par Ford). Jan 22, 2009

the performance is not bad, braking sucks, front disc, rear drum, accel is pritty good, and handles really good.
it built good, only a wheel beering, so far.
the interior is coming along, and exterior need to be painted.
i love driving my car, as much as i can!

My Protege, what can I say about it. I love the damn car!!! Its my little Honda/neon/focus/Ford F-150/(and just recently)Firebird slayer. Ive had the car for a fantastic 42000 miles and I see no sign of trading it in at any point soon. The performance of it is amazing, easy to drive, great stock sound system, and comfortable ride. What is good:
Handling, cornering, acceleration is decent for a 4 cyl.
Style - in my opinion best looking Mazda - nothing excessive. Inside soft plastic. Seat covers are decent unlike 05 Honda Civic.
Some people say it is noisy - I say turn up the music!
Suspension is hard - but I can take on ramps at 100km/h
What is Bad:
Car is 100K, things changed/worked:
at 40 K sanded from disks
between 70K and 80K - a warning light for hand brake and ABS both came on. Do not know what that is, could not read error code. Usually comes up when it is really wet. So for the most of summer or winter i am riding with these off. decided not to fix it.
at 90K changed all brake pads, front calipers (right one was shot) and from disks.
at 100K lost my transmission. Something got broken inside and a pin fell out. Lost all oil. Replaced.
at 100K replaced stabilizer links - front end is Mazda's problem
at 100 K shows signs of rust under from right door and under rear fenders - will have to fight rust again.
Overall - I would recommend this car. if good care is taken of it it'll be a joy. Watch for front end

Interior is beautiful, car is super reliable, styling is very nice. Engine has a lot of torque at any rpm (including low), which makes it a better engine than the already great 1.8 l4 of the previous generations.No rust problem, NOTHING on it broke in over 6 years owning it, with the exception of a stupid anti-pollution device, the egr valve.Jan 13, 2008
