The ratings are based specifically on my Protege, not the make in general. It had the capabilities of being a decent car. It ran great, would've stopped better if I could have afforded to replace all of the shocks. Mine wasn't real well cared for, so it was a real junker when I bought it... The interior was still fairly decent, but the previous owner had been in the middle of stripping it for a paint job when he sold it to me, so there was no top coat, and there were dingers all over the place. It was nice because it was still a sturdy build, not this plastic junk most cars are now. It got terrible gas mileage, but there's a pretty good chance that was because I couldn't afford to fix stuff. I do have to admit, it was one of my more fun cars!Dec 07, 2010

I was fortunate enough to find one of these hiding out at a small dealership a week ago with only 55k miles on it. picked it up at a very affordable price. I recommend this car to anyone who can find one.Mar 18, 2010

Good Performance. It will get up and go when you ask it to without muck lag time that you can get on other cars.
Decent build quality. Have only need to do minor repairs to it. The lagest job I've had to do so far is replace a strut and that wasn't that bad.
Good appearance. After I had the car repainted for some minor damage from the previous owner, I feel proud to own my car and would be glad to claim it as mine any day. It doesn't have the smoothest lines, but it's alright.
Realitively Low Cost of ownership. Gas milage is somewhere between 25 and 35 MPG, depending on the time of year and the driving conditions. Very little for maintenance costs, minor repairs here and there.
Fun Factor: I you want a cheep ride that will get you there with a little excitement this is a good choice, especially if you get the manuel trany. It will do burnouts on wetpavement easily, on dry it will squeek a little and them just take off like a rocket. Great handeling on corners.Jan 27, 2009

Bought the car all beat to heck, but it starts and runs great, gets great mileage, and is reasonably fun to drive.Apr 04, 2008
