The Mustang II is a better car than most people think it is. It often is said to be a glorified Pinto when in reality it is the Pinto which used design elements from the Mustang. It had it's quirks but it also had it's good points. The quirks I can sum up with the fact that it was a product of gas shortages, competition from Asain manufacturers and pressure from the EPA and auto insurance regulations.
The good pont is that it is an awesome platform to modify into something so much better. Some models came stock with a 124hp (wimp) 5.0L (302c.i.) V-8 which is really sad since in 1971 the same engine put out 210hp. Well, any small block (289, 302, 351W) will fit in this car and any of thoses engines can be highly modified to put out LOADS of power. For example, the 351W can be purchased as a 427c.i. stroker which when built right can put out nearly 900hp without NOS.
The car is light, small and nimble and the first Ford with rack and pinion steering which makes it corner like nothing else. Well, with the proper tires/wheels of course.
It has a deep tunnel which makes it very strong for torqey engines.
Lastly, if you park a 1975 Cobra II, white with blue GT stripes next to a 1966 Mustang Fastback with the same paint, you will notice little differance. I say, give it a chance, after all (and this is only my opinion) it is much better than the 1970-73 tubs (way oversized) and the 1979-1992 glorified Escorts and Fairmont Fox chassis Mustangs that Ford put out.
Pros: Classic Mustang body lines, nimble, light, easily customizable
Cons: In stock form rather gutless with usless tires, product of sanctions, bad rap from generation used to 1964-69 MustangsMar 31, 2009

This was my first car and it wouldn't get out of the county! It did have a 302 V-8 in it, but it always overheated.Dec 30, 2007
