New & Used 2026 Subaru Outback for SaleNationwide

Is the 2026 Subaru Outback a good car?

The 2026 Subaru Outback earns 7.2/10 from our experts. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Cost effectiveness.

It stands out because it has been redesigned with an SUV-like shape while still keeping the practical strengths that made its wagon predecessors appealing. In testing, it proved as capable off-road as it was comfortable on pavement, which gives it a broad range of use for daily driving and weekend adventures. Subaru’s attention to how customers actually use their vehicles also comes through in the number of feature enhancements.

The main trade-off is that higher trim levels have diminishing returns, so you may find the sweet spot lower in the range rather than at the top. Even so, the Outback offers plenty of cargo space and a strong balance of price, performance, and practicality.

35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2026 Subaru Outback reliable?

The 2026 Subaru Outback is presented as a vehicle that should fit well into long-term ownership thanks to Subaru’s safety focus and its strong overall balance of practicality and comfort. It also feels composed and confident in the city and on the highway, and the base engine is described as more than adequate for most drivers.

Its powertrain is also framed as easy to live with, with the CVT avoiding the harsh drone some shoppers dislike and the standard all-wheel drive adding year-round usefulness. The Outback’s off-road hardware and simple X-Mode operation further support its reputation as a dependable all-rounder for mixed-use driving.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that higher trims may not deliver enough extra value to justify their added cost.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Subaru Outback?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim already brings attractive woven textile coverings on the dash and door panels, while higher trims add smoother materials and leather seat upholstery. The top Premier XT trim’s saddle brown palette is especially appealing, and the Premium XT also adds premium items such as a surround-view camera system.
• Powertrain: You can choose between a 2.5-litre boxer four-cylinder with 180 horsepower and a turbocharged 2.4-litre boxer-four with 260 hp. Both use a CVT and standard all-wheel drive, and the base engine is described as more capable than expected.
• Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight suite is standard and includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic braking, automatic emergency steering, emergency stop assist, haptic steering wheel alerts, a driver attention monitor, adaptive headlights, and automatic high beams. The Premium XT trim enhances some of the standard features and adds a surround-view camera system, which is also equipped on the Wilderness.
• Infotainment: The Outback uses a 12.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both operate wirelessly, and a wireless charging pad is available. Native cloud-based navigation is included with the Limited XT, Wilderness, and Premier XT trims.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates as little as 8.5 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving for the base engine and 9.7 L/100 km combined for the turbocharged XT models.

Which 2026 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2026 Subaru Outback is offered in 4 trim levels: Touring, Premium XT, Limited XT, Premier XT.

Here's the short version:

• Touring: This is the entry point and the best-value choice if you want the Outback’s core strengths without paying for extras you may not need. It already delivers the practical cabin, standard all-wheel drive, and the balanced driving character that define the model.
• Premium XT: This trim adds several niceties and driver assists, plus a surround-view camera system. It is the step to consider if you want more equipment, but the added price makes it less compelling than the Touring for many shoppers.
• Limited XT: This trim stands out because it adds native cloud-based navigation with a one-year trial, making it a stronger pick if you want more built-in tech.
• Premier XT: This is the most upscale version, with the appealing saddle brown interior palette and the most premium cabin presentation. It suits you if you want the richest feel, but the higher trim levels have diminishing returns.

The Premium XT trim enhances some of the standard safety features and also adds a surround-view camera system, which is also equipped on the Wilderness.

Choose the 2026 if:

• 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• The redesigned Outback blends SUV styling with wagon practicality and strong off-road ability.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It remains a rugged wagon with standard all-wheel drive and strong safety ratings.
