What should I look for when buying a used Volvo XC40?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: NRCan fuel economy ratings for the 2023 Volvo XC40 B5 are 9.2 litres per 100 kilometres combined (10.2 city, 7.9 highway) for B5 AWD models.
• Infotainment: For 2023, gasoline XC40 models get the Android-based infotainment system introduced on the XC40 Recharge for the 2021 model year, with Google Maps, Google Assistant, Apple CarPlay, and basic Bluetooth support.
• Safety package: Volvo’s Intellisafe suite includes lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic-sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

Which Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 offers these trims:

• Core: The entry trim includes the standard safety suite, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 9-inch touchscreen, making it the value-focused starting point.
• Plus: This trim adds front and side parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, and fog lights, which makes it the best-value choice for many shoppers.
• Ultimate: This trim adds adaptive cruise control, Pilot Assist, a 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system, and available upscale touches such as a panoramic moonroof and Orrefors crystal shift knob.

What Volvo XC40 do most buyers choose?

The Volvo XC40 years with the most listings are 2023, 2024, and 2025.

These higher-volume years tend to be the easiest to shop because they give you more choice in trims, colours, and pricing. They also usually reflect the model years that have the broadest market presence and the most active seller interest.

What is the Volvo XC40's resale value?

The table shows broad downward movement across the XC40 lineup, which can work in your favour if you’re shopping used. The steepest drops are concentrated in the newer model years, while the smaller declines suggest some versions are settling more gradually in the market.

The 2024, 2021, and 2022 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Volvo XC40 safe?

• 2023: 8/10

Volvo’s Intellisafe suite is standard on the XC40, bringing lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. For the safest used buy, the 2022 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.

Should I buy a used Volvo XC40 now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −12.96% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −9.04%.
• Deal availability: The 2025 model has 20.5% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 31.5%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2023 model has the most listings at a current average price of $32,861 CAD. The Volvo XC40 offers a premium-feeling cabin with distinctive Scandinavian style and everyday practicality.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: A big change for the 2023 model year is under the hood, where Volvo swapped in mild-hybrid powertrains as part of its push to give each model in its North American lineup at least some degree of electrification. These add a 48-volt electrical system and a 13-horsepower integrated starter generator, which assists the gasoline engine and allows for more use of the engine start/stop system to improve fuel economy, while also filling gaps in its power delivery for added smoothness.
• Tech: For 2023, gasoline XC40 models get the Android-based infotainment system introduced on the XC40 Recharge for the 2021 model year. This uses Google apps in place of generic ones, so Google Maps serves as the navigation system, voice recognition is handled by Google Assistant, etc. It’s a bit like using Android Auto all the time, although Apple CarPlay and basic Bluetooth support are included as well.
• Safety: Upgrading from the base Core trim level to the XC40 Plus adds front and side parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system, while the Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist, which can control steering, acceleration, and braking on highways, but remains a hands-on system.
• Starting price: Pricing starts at $46,500 for a base XC40 Core.

If you're buying used today, the 2023 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
