What should I look for when buying a used Volvo XC40?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: NRCan fuel economy ratings for the 2023 Volvo XC40 B5 are 9.2 litres per 100 kilometres combined (10.2 city, 7.9 highway) for B5 AWD models.

Which Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 offers these trims:

• Core: The entry trim brings the Android-based infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch touchscreen, dual-zone automatic climate control, and standard safety features including lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.
• Plus: This trim adds fog lights, front and side parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera system, making it a strong value pick if you want more convenience and parking help.
• Ultimate: This trim adds adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist, along with premium touches such as the 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system and available upscale options like a panoramic moonroof.

What Volvo XC40 do most buyers choose?

The Volvo XC40 years with the most listings are 2025, 2023, and 2024.

These higher-volume years tend to be the easiest places to shop because you get more inventory to compare and a better chance of finding the right colour, trim, and price combination. They also tend to attract more attention from used buyers because the selection is broader and the market is more active.

What is the Volvo XC40's resale value?

The table shows broad downward movement across the XC40 lineup, which can create better opportunities for used shoppers. Several model years have seen double-digit drops, so recent inventory can offer meaningful value if you are comparing prices carefully. The smallest changes are still negative, which means the market has been adjusting across the board rather than holding steady.

The 2019, 2024, and 2021 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Volvo XC40 safe?

• 2023: 8/10
• 2022: 10/10
• 2021: 9/10

Volvo’s Intellisafe suite of driver assistance and safety features is standard on the XC40.

For the safest used buy, the 2022 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.

Should I buy a used Volvo XC40 now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −12.89% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −10.21%.
• Deal availability: The 2025 model has 26.5% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 27.8%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $41,552 CAD. The Volvo XC40 offers a distinctive Scandinavian design, a premium-feeling cabin, and practical everyday packaging.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: A big change for the 2023 model year is under the hood, where Volvo swapped in mild-hybrid powertrains as part of its push to give each model in its North American lineup at least some degree of electrification. These add a 48-volt electrical system and a 13-horsepower integrated starter generator, which assists the gasoline engine and allows for more use of the engine start/stop system to improve fuel economy, while also filling gaps in its power delivery for added smoothness.
• Tech: For 2023, gasoline XC40 models get the Android-based infotainment system introduced on the XC40 Recharge for the 2021 model year. This uses Google apps in place of generic ones, so Google Maps serves as the navigation system, voice recognition is handled by Google Assistant, etc.
• Safety: Upgrading from the base Core trim level to the XC40 Plus adds front and side parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system, while the Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist, which can control steering, acceleration, and braking on highways, but remains a hands-on system.
• Starting price: Pricing starts at $46,500 CAD for a base XC40 Core.

If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
