How much does the 2023 Volvo XC40 cost?

Prices have softened 17.71% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 102 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 a good car?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is a solid fit if you want a compact luxury SUV that leans more toward style, comfort, and a premium feel than outright practicality. The user rating is 2/5, and our experts score it 7.5/10.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Volvo’s updates for this model year give the XC40 a more modern cabin and a refreshed exterior, while the standard B5 all-wheel drive setup adds a confident, upscale character. It is aimed at shoppers who value design and a comfortable driving experience in a smaller package, but it is not the most practical choice if cargo room matters most.

Trade-offs include limited cargo space and the fact that the Recharge model is expensive.

The XC40’s market position is fairly balanced, with 26.5% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 reliable?

The 2023 Volvo XC40’s appeal is built around a refined driving experience and a premium-feeling package, but the newly added mild-hybrid hardware adds some complexity.

The mild-hybrid system uses a 48-volt electrical setup and a 13-horsepower integrated starter generator to support the gasoline engine and smooth out power delivery. Volvo also includes a three-year/100,000-kilometre limited warranty in Canada, which is standard coverage for the segment.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the added mild-hybrid components may be more complicated than the older setup they replaced.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volvo XC40?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Core, Plus, and Ultimate are the trim levels to compare. The base Core covers the essentials, but Plus adds front and side parking sensors plus a 360-degree camera system, while Ultimate brings more convenience and driver-assist equipment. If you want the best value, the mid-level Plus is the one to focus on.
• Powertrain: Canadian B5 models use a 2.0-litre turbo-four with mild-hybrid assistance, rated at 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The mild-hybrid system is meant to improve smoothness and fuel economy.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic-sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and whiplash-preventing front seats. Adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist are reserved for the Ultimate trim, so the base trim misses those features.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch portrait touchscreen, plus Android-based Google built-in functionality, Apple CarPlay, and basic Bluetooth support. The system is standard, but the touchscreen-heavy layout may not suit everyone.
• Fuel efficiency: NRCan rates the B5 AWD at 9.2 L/100 km combined, with 10.2 city and 7.9 highway.

Which 2023 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the XC40’s core design, standard safety equipment, and the new Android-based infotainment system. It makes sense if you want the XC40 experience at the lowest price, but you give up some convenience features.
• Plus: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds front and side parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system. If you want a better-equipped XC40 without jumping all the way to the top trim, this is the one to target.
• Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, adding adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist, along with the kind of premium touches that suit buyers who want the most comfort and driver assistance.

The base trim does not include adaptive cruise control, while Plus and Ultimate add more safety and convenience equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volvo XC40?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 102 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.71% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $32,851 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $32,897 CAD sits slightly below last year's $39,975 CAD.

That drop suggests the XC40 has become more attractive to used buyers than it was a year ago. If you plan to sell later, you should expect a softer resale environment than last year’s market. For you as a buyer, that can improve negotiating room today.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 earns top “Good” ratings in most IIHS crash tests, but it was rated “Acceptable” in the updated side-impact test. It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Volvo equips the XC40 with standard lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic-sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and whiplash-preventing front seats. The Plus trim adds front and side parking sensors plus a 360-degree camera system, while the Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist.

The updated side-impact result is the main caveat to keep in mind, especially if you are comparing it with rivals that have cleaner crash-test records.

Should I buy a 2023 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.71% compared with last year.
• The 2023 update brings refreshed styling, a mild-hybrid powertrain, and the Android-based infotainment system.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $30,747 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $32,897 CAD average.
• It is mainly a carryover model with no significant changes.

The bottom line: Choose the 2023 if you want the updated powertrain and cabin tech, especially if you value the refreshed feel. If your priority is spending less, the 2022 is the simpler value play.
