What should I look for when buying a used Volvo XC40?

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: Intellisafe suite of driver assistance and safety features, with lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, traffic-sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.
• Infotainment: Android-based infotainment system with Google Maps, Google Assistant, Apple CarPlay, basic Bluetooth support, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 9-inch touchscreen.
• Fuel efficiency: NRCan fuel economy ratings for the 2023 Volvo XC40 B5 are 9.2 litres per 100 kilometres combined (10.2 city, 7.9 highway) for B5 AWD models.

Which Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC40 offers these trims:

• Core: The entry trim includes the Android-based infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch touchscreen, and Volvo’s standard safety suite; it suits buyers who want the XC40’s core premium feel and technology.
• Plus: Adds fog lights, front and side parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera system, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers who want more convenience and parking help.
• Ultimate: Adds adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist, along with available premium touches such as the Harman Kardon audio system in the tested vehicle, for buyers who want the most equipment.

What Volvo XC40 do most buyers choose?

The Volvo XC40 years with the most listings are 2023, 2024, and 2025.

These higher-volume model years tend to be the most popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right colour, trim, and price. They also often sit in the sweet spot between newer features and broader used-market availability.

What is the Volvo XC40's resale value?

Most XC40 model years are down year over year, and several recent years show double-digit declines. That creates a favourable setup for used buyers, especially if you want a newer model with more equipment at a lower price than it carried a year ago. The smaller declines on some older years suggest steadier pricing at the lower end of the range.

The 2020, 2022, and 2021 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Volvo XC40 safe?

• 2023: 8/10
• 2022: 10/10
• 2021: 9/10

Volvo’s Intellisafe suite is standard across the XC40 range, and the 2023 model adds adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist on the Ultimate trim.

For the safest used buy, the 2022 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.
