Overall, the Toyota Highlander has built a strong reputation across its model years for reliability, comfort, and family-friendly features. Drivers appreciate its spacious interiors and smooth rides, often highlighting its impressive safety features as a key asset. Many also enjoy the performance and power of the engines. However, some common criticisms include a lack of advanced infotainment options in older models, tight third-row seating, and varying cargo space depending on configuration. Overall, the Highlander is seen as a dependable choice for families and an excellent value in the SUV market.

It’s well-equipped, comfortable, and family-friendly SUV with strong safety tech, a smooth ride, and premium touches (thanks to the platinum trim) like a panoramic moonroof, leather seating, and 12” touchscreen. Its V6 offers solid power and decent fuel efficiency for a 3-row SUV, and overall it feels modern, quiet, and refined. It’s a great value if you want a reliable, upscale daily driver! The main thing it’s missing is more usable third-row and cargo space. The 3rd row is tight for adults and cargo behind it is limited. Otherwise, it’s a strong all-around pick and fits exactly what I was looking for. I would compare this to the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Honda Pilot, and the Ford Explorer.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Highlander stands out as a practical, comfort-focused midsize SUV with a strong reputation for reliability and safety. In this generation, all-wheel drive is standard in Canada, and Toyota offers both gas and hybrid powertrains. The Highlander also brings useful everyday strengths such as up to 2,387 litres of cargo space with the seats folded down, an 8-inch touchscreen, USB inputs, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense as standard equipment. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a family vehicle that is easy to live with and well equipped from the start.
For 2023, Toyota replaced the previous gas engine with a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder making 265 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid remains available with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that combine for 243 system horsepower. Fuel economy is another strength: the turbo four averages 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres combined, while the hybrid can deliver 6.7 L/100 km combined. Those figures help explain why the Highlander has long appealed to buyers looking for efficiency without giving up space or versatility.
Its main drawbacks are familiar ones. The Highlander is described as lacking vigour, and its third row is tiny. Toyota’s infotainment system is also said to be a hassle to use, even if the standard smartphone integration helps. Still, for shoppers who value comfort, practicality, safety, and strong fuel economy over driving excitement, the 2023 Toyota Highlander remains a compelling choice.
