What should I look for when buying a used Nissan Altima?

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: Nissan Safety Shield 360
• Infotainment: an 8-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, or the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
• Fuel efficiency: The Altima AWD should burn 8.2 litres per 100 kilometres in S trim and 8.4 L/100 km in other trims in combined driving.

Which Nissan Altima trim should I buy?

The 2025 Nissan Altima offers these trims:

• S: The entry trim uses the standard 8-inch touchscreen, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker stereo, making it the value-focused starting point.
• SR: Adds 19-inch wheels, sport-bolstered front seats, and a wireless charging pad, while keeping the standard tech setup; it suits you if you want a sportier look and feel.
• SR Premium: Adds the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, NissanConnect services, navigation, ProPilot Assist 1.0, and the nine-speaker Bose audio system; this is the best-value trim.
• Platinum: Adds the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, NissanConnect services, navigation, the nine-speaker Bose audio system, ProPilot Assist 1.0, and a surround-view camera system for the most feature-rich Altima.

What Nissan Altima do most buyers choose?

The Nissan Altima years with the most listings are 2016, 2024, and 2015.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, colour, and price. They also often attract shoppers looking for a balance of value, features, and broad availability.

What is the Nissan Altima's resale value?

Most Altima model years are down year over year, which is good news if you want to buy used at a lower entry price. The biggest drops are in the double digits, so recent and older examples alike have become more affordable. A few years have fallen less sharply, which can help them retain a bit more of their value relative to the rest of the lineup.

The 2017, 2022, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Nissan Altima safe?

• 2025: 5/10
• 2024: 7/10
• 2023: 7/10
• 2022: 9/10
• 2021: 9/10
• 2020: 8/10

Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on every Altima.

For the safest used buy, the 2021 and 2022 models both post the highest confirmed score of 9/10.

Should I buy a used Nissan Altima now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2024 model is at −14.09% versus a year ago, and the 2023 model is at −14.9%.
• Deal availability: The 2024 model has 29.7% good and great deals.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2016 model has the most listings at a current average price of $9,547 CAD. The Nissan Altima offers a roomy cabin and a comfortable, easygoing character that make it a practical everyday sedan.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: Nissan equips every 2025 Altima sold in Canada with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and standard AWD, generating 182 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque, and the Altima AWD should burn 8.2 litres per 100 kilometres in S trim and 8.4 L/100 km in other trims in combined driving.
• Tech: The standard setup has an 8-inch touchscreen, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker stereo, while the Altima SR Premium and Platinum get a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, NissanConnect services, and a navigation system.
• Safety: Choosing the SR Premium trim level is also your ticket to ProPilot Assist 1.0, which pairs an adaptive cruise control system with stop-and-go capability and a lane-centring assist system, and the Altima Platinum also has a surround-view camera system.
• Starting price: At its base price, the 2025 Altima is the most affordable midsize car on the rapidly dwindling market.

If you're buying used today, the 2016 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
