What should I look for when buying a used Mercedes-Benz C-Class?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: The C300 uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing power specs of 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. It works with a nine-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The latter includes an electric motor that serves as the starter, and it can contribute up to 20 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque in short bursts. Mercedes says the C300 will do zero to 100 kilometres per hour in 6.0 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited to 210 kilometres per hour.
• Infotainment: The C-Class gets an infotainment setup designed to mimic that of the S-Class, with a freestanding digital instrument cluster and portrait-oriented touchscreen. Even a C300 with zero options gets a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and 11.9-inch touchscreen, which is angled six degrees toward the driver.
• Safety package: The 2022 Mercedes C-Class does get an array of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS)—many of them as standard equipment. Standard safety features include automatic emergency brake assist, blind-spot monitoring (with safe exit assist), a driver-attention monitor, park assist, Pre-Safe (automatically tightens seatbelts and closes windows to prepare for a collision), and Pre-Safe Sound, which emits a “pink noise” that helps the ears shut out loud noises, according to Mercedes.

Which Mercedes-Benz C-Class trim should I buy?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class offers these trims:

• C 300 4Matic sedan: The C 300 4Matic sedan is the core 2022 model, with 4Matic all-wheel drive, the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, and the standard luxury and safety equipment that define the redesigned C-Class. It is the best-value trim for most used shoppers who want the main C-Class experience.
• Mercedes-AMG C43: The Mercedes-AMG C43 adds a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, rear-axle steering, and an adjustable sport-tuned suspension for buyers who want a sharper performance focus.
• Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance: The Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance sits at the top of the range with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and 671 horsepower for shoppers who want the most performance in the lineup.

What Mercedes-Benz C-Class do most buyers choose?

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class years with the most listings are 2018, 2017, and 2019.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right colour, trim, and price. They also often sit in the sweet spot between newer features and lower used-car pricing.

What is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class's resale value?

Most model years are down year over year, which is good news if you are shopping used because it creates more room for value. The biggest drops are concentrated in newer and mid-cycle years, while a few older years have softened by smaller amounts. One model year in the table has moved up slightly, showing that the C-Class does not follow a perfectly uniform price pattern.

The 2021, 2014, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class safe?

• 2022: 7/10
• 2017: 10/10

The 2022 C-Class includes an array of advanced driver-assistance systems, including automatic emergency brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with safe exit assist, a driver-attention monitor, park assist, Pre-Safe, and Pre-Safe Sound.

For the safest used buy, the 2017 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.
