What should I look for when buying a used Mazda MAZDA3?
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: i-Activsense with forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, a driver condition monitor, blind-spot monitors, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, plus a wireless charging pad.
- Fuel efficiency: The Mazda3 sedan with the base engine is the most efficient version at 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres combined (8.8 city, 6.6 highway). Adding AWD increases the combined rating to 8.1 L/100 km, while opting for the Turbo engine bumps the figure to 8.8 L/100 km combined. Numbers for the Mazda3 Sport are 0.1 to 0.2 L/100 km higher, while the base engine with the available manual averages 8.3 L/100 km combined.
Which Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2026 Mazda MAZDA3 offers these trims:
- GX: The entry trim uses the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, front-wheel drive, and a six-speed automatic on the sedan; it suits buyers who want the core Mazda3 experience at the lowest price.
- GS: This trim adds the option of all-wheel drive, making it a smart pick if you want extra traction and broader capability.
- GT: The GT adds the available Turbo engine, plus features such as adaptive headlights, a head-up display, lane centring, a surround-view camera system, reverse automatic braking, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system; it is the best-value trim for shoppers who want the most complete Mazda3 experience.
What Mazda MAZDA3 do most buyers choose?
The Mazda MAZDA3 years with the most listings are 2018, 2017, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | 250 | 32.4% |
| 2017 | 241 | 34.4% |
| 2024 | 240 | 31.7% |
| 2019 | 235 | 34.9% |
| 2015 | 227 | 30.8% |
| 2016 | 218 | 31.2% |
These higher-volume years tend to attract more shoppers because they offer a strong mix of availability, value, and the Mazda3’s signature style and driving enjoyment. When more examples are on the market, it is usually easier to compare trims, colours, and equipment levels before you buy.
What is the Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 | $9,362 CAD | −12.07% |
| 2016 | $11,669 CAD | −11.08% |
| 2021 | $21,419 CAD | −10.37% |
| 2019 | $17,791 CAD | −9.44% |
| 2023 | $25,194 CAD | −9.15% |
| 2022 | $22,773 CAD | −8.5% |
| 2024 | $26,641 CAD | −7.96% |
| 2018 | $15,207 CAD | −7.94% |
| 2015 | $10,168 CAD | −6.8% |
| 2025 | $28,358 CAD | −2.55% |
| 2017 | $13,884 CAD | −2.24% |
| 2020 | $19,869 CAD | −1.28% |
Most Mazda MAZDA3 model years are down year over year, which can create better opportunities for used buyers. The largest drops are concentrated in several older and mid-cycle years, while a few years have changed only slightly. That pattern suggests there are still attractive value points across the range, especially if you are flexible on model year and trim.
The 2020, 2017, and 2025 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Mazda MAZDA3 now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −2.55% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −7.96%.
- Deal availability: The 2024 model has 31.7% good and great deals.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2018 model has the most listings at a current average price of $15,207 CAD. The Mazda MAZDA3 offers a stylish, driver-focused character that makes even everyday commuting feel more rewarding.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The standard engine on all three trims in Canada—GX, GS, and GT—is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that produces 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, while the Turbo engine increases output to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular unleaded fuel and 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium.
- Tech: Higher-trimmed models get a 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad.
- Safety: The top GT model adds adaptive headlights, a head-up display, lane centring, a surround-view camera system, and reverse automatic braking.
- Starting price: The 2026 Mazda3 sedan has an MSRP of $28,346 CAD for the base GX trim.
If you're buying used today, the 2018 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Exceptional driving experience. The most balanced, precision crafted steering wheel system of any cars I have ever owned (25 of them). Drives better than most acclaimed German machines out there.Mazda cars are very enjoyable to drive, yet these models are ones of the most underrated and undervalued vehicles yet. Amazing Mazda vehicles. They're excellent values, but folks have to give Mazda cars chances. Drive one. The issues I have with the current models are: 1). There's no 6 Speed Manual with the 2.5 Turbo AWD Premium Plus trim models. 2). Please, bring CD ( Compact Disc) entertainment back in all Mazdas. 3). Add colors to the interior design. It's too bland, monotonous, monochromatic, and boring. The only comparisons out there to the superb driving of Mazda vehicles are Nissan Altima SR, Audi S3 and BMW M340.

Reviewed a 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 on Sep 19, 2025
The Mazda 3 really shines compared to other compact cars because it feels so much more fun and engaging to drive, with sharp handling, responsive steering, and even the option for all-wheel drive or a turbo engine if you want more power. Inside, it feels more like a luxury car than an economy sedan, thanks to its quiet cabin, high-quality materials, and sleek design. On top of that, it’s packed with modern safety features and earns strong crash-test ratings, which adds a lot of peace of mind. The trade-offs are that the back seat and trunk aren’t the most spacious, the ride can feel a little firm on rough roads, and the higher trims can get pricey. When you compare it to other cars, the Mazda 3 is definitely more stylish and fun than the Toyota Corolla, though the Corolla has hybrids and a long reputation for reliability; it feels more upscale than the Honda Civic, though the Civic offers more space and resale value; and it’s nicer to drive than the Hyundai Elantra, even if the Elantra is usually cheaper at the entry level. Overall, the Mazda 3 is a great choice if you care about style, quality, and the joy of driving, rather than just getting the most space or the lowest price.

Mazdas are generally good value. Maybe not as refined as some of the Honda/Toyota models but just as reliable and generally cheaper.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by delivering intrinsic value, especially when compared with traditional mainstream alternatives. It also benefits from Mazda’s compact-car focus in a lineup that, for this year, is down to just the MX-5 and the Mazda3. A new Platinum Quartz Metallic paint colour is available, adding a fresh visual option to an already stylish package.
What makes the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 appealing is the way it blends style and driving enjoyment. It is described as fun to drive and backed by great safety ratings, which gives it broad appeal for buyers who want a compact car that feels more polished than many rivals. Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for the comfortable and luxurious interior, impressive handling, strong performance, and available Bose stereo system.
There are trade-offs, though. The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 is noted for poor fuel economy, a cramped back seat, and unintuitive technology. Those drawbacks mean it may not be the most practical choice for every shopper, but for buyers who value design, driving feel, and a more upscale atmosphere, it remains a distinctive option in the compact-car class.
