Is the Lexus RX a good car?
Yes — the Lexus RX is a strong choice if you want a luxury SUV that puts comfort, refinement, and long-term dependability first. The all-generations owner rating is 4.7/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the RX for its comfortable ride, upscale cabin, and reliable ownership experience. Across the model line, the RX also earns repeat praise for its quiet interior and well-equipped feel, which helps explain its long-running popularity.
Expert reviews rate the 2020 and 2022 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs are a comfort-first driving character, limited cargo space in some years, and technology or ride tuning that can feel less polished than the rest of the package. Even so, the RX remains a compelling used luxury SUV if you value a calm, premium daily driver.
30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Lexus RX models reliable?
Owners consistently praise the Lexus RX for comfort, luxury, and reliability, and the expert reviews reinforce its reputation for a calm, polished driving experience. The RX also stands out for its strong resale value and long-running appeal as a dependable luxury SUV.
- Owners rate the Lexus RX between 4.3 and 5 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, that combination points to a model that has a strong track record for long-term ownership confidence.
What should I look for when buying a used Lexus RX?
Key things to evaluate:
- Fuel efficiency: The 2024 Lexus RX is offered in four distinct models, starting with the base RX 350. It's powered by a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. In Canada—where the RX is built at Toyota’s Cambridge, Ontario, assembly plant—all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard on all models. The RX 350h is the hybrid version with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine making 246 hp and 233 lb-ft of torque that is routed through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The RX 500h F Sport Performance represents the sporty side of the RX lineup, with a turbo 2.4-litre inline-four combining with the hybrid powertrain to produce 366 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. It sports a six-speed automatic transmission. We drove the plug-in hybrid RX 450h+. It takes the RX 350h's powertrain and adds a much larger 18.1-kWh battery pack. Power output is increased to 304 hp and Natural Resources Canada estimates it can go up to 60 kilometres on electric power with a full charge. On a standard Level 2 charger, it should only take 2.5 hours to fully replenish the battery. The RX 350 and RX 350h tend to feel underpowered when compared to other luxury SUVs, making you feel as though you need to floor the accelerator when merging onto a flowing highway. The weak sensation gets even more prevalent with the hybrid's CVT, which keeps the engine revs high as the engine groans the entire time. That's not the case with the more powerful RX 450h+, as it can reach 96 km/h in a Lexus-estimated 6.2 seconds. That's about a full second quicker than the supporting models. It also feels more responsive, thanks to immediate initial electric propulsion, but it's still not as potent-feeling as many of its rivals. The brake pedal is appropriately soft for a luxury SUV, and you won't feel any of the old hybrid transitions from regeneration to the application of the physical brake pads. On a winding mountain pass, the RX feels wider than it is which, when paired with its soft suspension tuning, doesn't encourage sporty driving. The suspension is definitely tuned for comfort and ably smooths over most imperfections in the road. This results in some rather noticeable body roll when cornering as well as some residual rebounds after encountering a bump. It's not so soft as to feel floaty though, and most luxury SUV shoppers should find it to their liking. If you're seeking more athleticism on a twisty road, the available F Sport Handling trim for the RX 350 or the RX 500h might satisfy your craving. More likely than not, if you're interested in sharper performance, you'd be better served by the RX's competition. The Lexus RX's main mission is comfort, and it certainly accomplishes that with ease.
- Infotainment: Thanks to the 2023-model-year redesign, the RX ditched the trackpad infotainment controller that was one of the most frustrating interfaces ever put in a vehicle. The new infotainment system is much more conventional, with a touchscreen that measures 9.8 inches in lower-priced configurations and a much larger 14-inch display for higher-end models. The on-screen menus are fairly logical in their layout, and the system is bolstered by sharp graphics and quick responses. The system also accepts natural speech commands. You can simply tap the voice button and say, "set temperature to 21 degrees," or "where's the closest Starbucks?" and it will automatically adjust the climate control or give you options for destinations. It's not as feature-rich as the Mercedes-Benz MBUX system, but it is certainly helpful in many situations. On the steering wheel are two multi-function pads. On the left, you can toggle between phone and music controls, and on the right, you have cruise control buttons and some additional settings. For the most part, it's easy to use and it helps that when you touch the pads, a diagram pops up in the available head-up display to let you know what each button does. It's not as intuitive as some other systems, but after a very short amount of time, it's easy to get used to the operation. You do need to activate the buttons by touching them initially, then pushing, which can be slightly annoying since you feel as though you need to tap the button twice. All RX trims come with a cloud-based navigation system, but it’s sometimes prone to connectivity issues and is also only available as a subscription service with a three-year free trial. Remote monitoring and control via a smartphone app are also part of this trial and subscription. Considering the connectivity issues and subscription, most owners will likely opt for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. They're both wireless and operated without incident in our experience.
- Safety package: All RX models come standard with the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 suite of advanced safety and driver-assistance features. These include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a rear passenger safe-exit system, and parking proximity sensors.
Which Lexus RX trim should I buy?
The 2024 Lexus RX offers these trims:
- RX 350: The entry point brings the turbocharged 2.4-litre engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and standard AWD, making it the core choice for buyers who want the RX’s comfort-first character.
- RX 350h: The hybrid adds 246 hp, a CVT, and stronger fuel efficiency, and it stands out as the best-value trim for many shoppers who want lower running costs.
- RX 500h F Sport Performance: This trim adds 366 hp, 406 lb-ft of torque, and a six-speed automatic, giving you the most performance-focused RX in the lineup.
- RX 450h+: The plug-in hybrid adds an 18.1-kWh battery pack, 304 hp, and up to 60 kilometres of electric-only range for buyers who can charge regularly.
What Lexus RX do most buyers choose?
The Lexus RX years with the most listings are 2025, 2023, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 247 | 35.6% |
| 2023 | 239 | 31.8% |
| 2024 | 221 | 31.2% |
| 2022 | 144 | 25% |
| 2026 | 126 | 35.7% |
| 2021 | 114 | 28.1% |
These higher-volume years tend to be the easiest places to shop because they give you more inventory to compare and more chances to find a well-priced example. They also line up with newer model years that many used buyers prefer for their updated features and broader appeal.
What is the Lexus RX's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 | $17,905 CAD | −12.79% |
| 2024 | $54,337 CAD | −12.59% |
| 2025 | $60,054 CAD | −11.94% |
| 2023 | $49,829 CAD | −10.91% |
| 2016 | $27,271 CAD | −10.27% |
| 2019 | $33,791 CAD | −10.14% |
| 2018 | $31,978 CAD | −6.41% |
| 2017 | $29,140 CAD | −4.98% |
| 2022 | $43,713 CAD | −4.07% |
| 2020 | $39,326 CAD | −3.49% |
| 2021 | $42,919 CAD | −0.18% |
| 2015 | $22,176 CAD | +1.48% |
Most RX model years are moving lower year over year, which creates more room for used buyers to find value. The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer and mid-cycle years, while a few older examples are changing more slowly.
The 2021 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2015, 2021, and 2020 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Lexus RX now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −11.94% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −12.59%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 35.6% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 31.2%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $60,054 CAD. The Lexus RX offers a calm, comfort-first driving experience with a premium cabin and strong long-term appeal.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The 2024 Lexus RX is offered in four distinct models, starting with the base RX 350.
- Tech: Thanks to the 2023-model-year redesign, the RX ditched the trackpad infotainment controller that was one of the most frustrating interfaces ever put in a vehicle. The new infotainment system is much more conventional, with a touchscreen that measures 9.8 inches in lower-priced configurations and a much larger 14-inch display for higher-end models. The system also accepts natural speech commands. All RX trims come with a cloud-based navigation system, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto are both wireless.
- Safety: All RX models come standard with the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 suite of advanced safety and driver-assistance features. These include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a rear passenger safe-exit system, and parking proximity sensors.
- Starting price: Pricing for the 2024 Lexus RX start at $63,190 CAD for the base RX 350.
If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Love our 2020 Lexus RX — it’s smooth, quiet, and feels genuinely luxurious. The interior quality and comfort are exactly what I hoped for. My only complaints are the subscription requirements for remote start and navigation, and I wish the rear seats had warmers. Overall, excellent value, great reliability, and a car that feels like it will last.

Extremely clean interior with the exception of one tear in the drivers seat, made me want to buy this vehicle. The interior felt new. No stains, not even dirt. The exterior had been repainted at one point, albeit well done. The listing says no accidents but it had a minor cosmetic rear impact in 2014 (no big deal) and unfortunately also had a tree branch fall on the sunroof shattering the glass and, despite being repaired, leaving it inoperable at least consistently. When I tested the sunroof, it wouldn't close because broken glass particles were in the way. Those were cleaned up and the dealer says it’s functioning now, but you take on some risk. Not the end of the world. If I purchased this vehicle, I’d pull the fuse that operates the sunroof and leave it in the closed position. It drove smooth, drivetrain felt great, smooth transmission, alignment, breaks, suspension.

CarGurus recommends the 2023 Lexus RX

Summary
With 237 currently listed for sale and an average price of $49,664 CAD, 32.1% of 2023 Lexus RX listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Lexus RX 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
Why it stands out
The redesigned 2023 Lexus RX takes a cautious approach, but it still gains enough dynamic and technological upgrades to feel meaningfully improved. Lexus has long built the RX around the qualities many luxury crossover buyers want most: reliability, refinement, safety, and style, and this latest version continues that formula while aiming for a better balance overall. Based on a day spent driving numerous versions of the new RX, the result comes across as a two-row midsize SUV that stays true to the model’s established appeal without feeling stagnant.
What stands out most is the cabin, which is comfortable and finished with premium interior materials, and the technology is a clear strength as well. Those traits make the 2023 Lexus RX appealing to shoppers who want a polished luxury SUV that feels upscale and modern. The trade-offs are worth noting, though: the standard suspension can produce a woozy ride on imperfect pavement, cargo space is limited, and the head-up display integration is not especially good.
