What should I look for when buying a used Land Rover Defender?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: The Defender 110 is rated by Natural Resources Canada at 12.0 litres per 100 kilometres combined (13.1 city, 10.6 highway) with the four-cylinder and just a tick higher with the six, while the two-door Defender 90 is actually a little less fuel efficient with the smaller engine.

Which Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2026 Land Rover Defender offers these trims:

• Defender 90: The two-door body style gives you the classic Defender shape in a shorter package, and it suits you if you want the most compact version of the lineup.
• Defender 110: This four-door version is the broad-appeal choice, with standard four-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic, and the widest range of powertrains and equipment.
• Defender 130: The stretched body style adds more space and presence, making it the right fit if you want the largest Defender in the range.
• Defender X: This trim adds more black exterior trim, including a blackout treatment for the front fascia and hood, for a more aggressive look.
• Defender Trophy Edition: This edition adds Sandglow Yellow paint that recalls the Camel Trophy, giving it a distinctive heritage-inspired appearance.
• Defender Octa: The high-performance 110-derived model adds massive fender flares, enormous all-terrain tires, wider ride height and track width, and the 6D Dynamics suspension system; it is the standout choice if you want the most extreme performance and capability.

What Land Rover Defender do most buyers choose?

The Land Rover Defender years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.

The highest-volume years tend to be the easiest places to shop because you get more inventory to compare and more chances to find the right trim and price. In the Defender’s case, the most popular used picks also line up with recent model years that balance newer features with broad availability.

What is the Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The table shows broad downward movement across the model range, which can work in your favour if you are shopping used. The larger drops are especially noticeable on some recent years, while a few others have eased by a smaller amount.

The 2021, 2025, and 2022 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Land Rover Defender now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −14.25% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −14.75%.
• Deal availability: The 2025 model has 39.2% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 37.9%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $70,651 CAD. The Land Rover Defender offers a distinctive blend of rugged style, upscale quality, and genuine off-road character.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: Land Rover offers several powertrain options for the 2026 Defender, but that’s about to change, and the inline-four is good for 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque while the V8 produces 518 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque.
• Tech: For 2026, the Defender receives a larger 13.1-inch touchscreen that continues to integrate wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is also standard on most trim levels.
• Safety: A driver attention monitor is new for 2026, giving the Defender a feature that’s been available on certain non-luxury vehicles for some time.
• Starting price: Canadian pricing ranges from just over $80,000 for a base Defender 90 S to around $183,000 for an Octa.

If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
