What should I look for when buying a used Hyundai Sonata?

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: Every 2025 Sonata has standard advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), including forward collision warning with intersection assist, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: All 2025 Sonata models have a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and the N Line also has a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, voice recognition, and the ability to connect two smartphones to Bluetooth simultaneously.
• Fuel efficiency: The Sonata Hybrid sedan set to arrive in 2026 offers a similarly adequate 192-hp drivetrain, which benefits from immediate electric motor torque when accelerating from a standstill and can return fuel economy as low as an estimated 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

Which Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2025 Hyundai Sonata offers these trims:

• Preferred-Trend: This is the value-focused choice, with the 191-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, available AWD, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluelink connected services, and the full standard ADAS suite. It suits you if you want the broadest mix of comfort, tech, and everyday usability.
• N Line: This is the performance-oriented trim, adding the turbocharged 2.5-litre engine with 290 hp and 311 pound-feet of torque, a dual-clutch automatic transmission, 19-inch wheels, sport-tuned suspension, rack-mounted steering, quad-outlet exhaust, navigation, wireless charging, digital key technology, and an 8-speaker Bose sound system. It is the pick if you want the most engaging Sonata and the strongest feature set.

What Hyundai Sonata do most buyers choose?

The Hyundai Sonata years with the most listings are 2016, 2024, and 2022.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more choice, more price spread, and a better chance of finding the right trim and condition. They also often sit in the sweet spot between newer features and lower used-car pricing.

What is the Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

Most Sonata model years in the table are down year over year, which creates better opportunities for used buyers. The largest drops are concentrated in the newer and mid-cycle years, while the oldest examples show smaller changes. That pattern suggests you can often find stronger value in the used market without giving up much equipment or comfort.

The 2015, 2017, and 2016 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Hyundai Sonata safe?

• 2025: 10/10
• 2022: 9/10
• 2021: 9/10

Every 2025 Sonata has standard advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). For the safest used buy, the 2025 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.

Should I buy a used Hyundai Sonata now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Sweet-spot year: The 2016 model has the most listings at a current average price of $11,016 CAD. The Hyundai Sonata offers roomy seating, a useful trunk, and a comfortable, easygoing character that suits daily driving well.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The Sonata’s base 191-horsepower, 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine is unremarkable, although it does offer AWD as an option for Preferred-Trend models, while the Sonata N Line uses a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 290 hp and 311 pound-feet of torque.
• Tech: All models have a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and the N Line also has a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, voice recognition, and the ability to connect two smartphones to Bluetooth simultaneously.

If you're buying used today, the 2016 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
