Are Hyundai Sonata models reliable?

Owners and experts consistently describe the Sonata as comfortable, well equipped, and good value for money. The strongest recurring themes are smooth driving manners, roomy interiors, and a feature-rich ownership experience.

For used buyers, long-term ownership risk depends heavily on model year and condition, so a careful history check matters most on older examples.

What should I look for when buying a used Hyundai Sonata?

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: Every 2025 Sonata has standard advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), including forward collision warning with intersection assist, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: All 2025 Sonata models have a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and the N Line also has a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel.
• Fuel efficiency: The Sonata Hybrid sedan set to arrive in 2026 offers a similarly adequate 192-hp drivetrain, which benefits from immediate electric motor torque when accelerating from a standstill and can return fuel economy as low as an estimated 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

Which Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2025 Hyundai Sonata offers these trims:

• Preferred-Trend: This is the value-focused choice, with the 191-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluelink connected services, and standard ADAS. It suits you if you want the most affordable path into the refreshed Sonata.
• N Line: This trim adds the turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 290 hp and 311 pound-feet of torque, a dual-clutch automatic transmission, 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, rack-mounted electric steering, a quad-outlet exhaust, navigation, wireless smartphone charging, digital key technology, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, and Highway Driving Assist. It is the best-value pick if you want the Sonata’s strongest performance and the most complete feature set.

What Hyundai Sonata do most buyers choose?

The Hyundai Sonata years with the most listings are 2024, 2022, and 2016.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right trim, colour, and condition. They also often sit in the sweet spot between newer features and more accessible pricing.

What is the Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

Most Sonata model years are showing double-digit year-over-year price declines, which is good news if you are shopping used and want more car for your money. The steepest drops are concentrated in several newer and mid-cycle years, while a few older examples are falling more slowly. That pattern suggests buyers have room to negotiate across much of the lineup.

The 2017, 2022, and 2023 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Hyundai Sonata safe?

• 2025: 10/10
• 2022: 9/10
• 2021: 9/10

Every 2025 Sonata has standard advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), including forward collision warning with intersection assist, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
