Is the Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the Hyundai Elantra is a strong used-car pick if you want value, efficiency, and a wide spread of trims and powertrains. The all-generations owner rating is 4.4/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners repeatedly praise the Elantra for its fuel economy, comfortable interiors, and overall value for money. Reviewers also highlight its safety features and available technology, which help it work well as a daily commuter and family car.
Expert reviews rate the 2021 and 2017 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs across recent expert-tested years centre on the polarising styling, the underwhelming base engine, and interior materials that feel cheap.
29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Hyundai Elantra models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently point to the Elantra's fuel economy, comfort, and value as its biggest strengths. Across the model years in the data, it also earns praise for practical features and a generally easygoing daily-driving character.
- Owners rate the Hyundai Elantra between 3 and 4.9 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-maintained example and checking service history carefully, especially on older model years.
What should I look for when buying a used Hyundai Elantra?
Key things to evaluate:
Fuel efficiency: The Elantra Hybrid is rated at 4.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 4.5 on the highway, and 4.7 combined, while non-hybrid trims are still impressive at 7.7 L/100 km city, 5.9 highway, and 6.9 combined for the base engine.
Infotainment: A 10.25-inch touchscreen is now standard on the Luxury trim and above, while the Essential and Preferred have an 8-inch touchscreen; the smaller system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Safety package: Hyundai’s SmartSense suite includes a simple forward braking assist system, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, lane following assist, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor.
Which Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2024 Hyundai Elantra offers these trims:
- Essential: The entry trim focuses on value with the 2.0-litre engine, CVT, 8-inch touchscreen, and the core safety suite; it suits you if you want the lowest-cost way into the lineup.
- Preferred: This trim adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit assist, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers who want more everyday convenience and confidence.
- Luxury: Luxury brings the 10.25-inch touchscreen, digital instrument panel, Bose audio, wireless charging pad, and Highway Driving Assist, so it suits you if you want the most rounded comfort-and-tech package.
- N Line Ultimate: This trim adds the 1.6-litre turbo-four, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, firmer sport-focused hardware, and the more dramatic exterior treatment, making it the pick if you want the most engaging Elantra short of the full N.
- N: The performance-focused N adds the 276-hp 2.0-litre turbo, eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, adaptive dampers, and revised steering hardware for the most serious driving experience in the range.
What Hyundai Elantra do most buyers choose?
The Hyundai Elantra years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 944 | 33.1% |
| 2025 | 784 | 33.2% |
| 2023 | 675 | 34.1% |
| 2022 | 645 | 33.2% |
| 2026 | 569 | 33% |
| 2021 | 567 | 32.6% |
Those higher-volume years tend to be the easiest to shop because you get more listings to compare and a broader spread of prices and trims. They also tend to attract more buyers because they sit close to the sweet spot between newer features and used-car value.
What is the Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | $12,306 CAD | −19.37% |
| 2017 | $10,252 CAD | −14.61% |
| 2018 | $11,975 CAD | −14.2% |
| 2020 | $14,645 CAD | −13.99% |
| 2025 | $24,489 CAD | −12.49% |
| 2022 | $18,612 CAD | −12.38% |
| 2021 | $17,565 CAD | −12.35% |
| 2014 | $7,120 CAD | −12.12% |
| 2023 | $20,893 CAD | −11.4% |
| 2024 | $22,546 CAD | −11.07% |
| 2016 | $8,665 CAD | −10.6% |
| 2015 | $7,834 CAD | −10.01% |
Most Elantra model years in the table are down by double digits year over year, which is good news if you are shopping used and want stronger value. The newer years are also seeing meaningful price drops, so recent-model shoppers have more room to find a deal.
The 2015, 2016, and 2024 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Hyundai Elantra safe?
- 2024: 6/10
- 2023: 9/10
- 2022: 9/10
- 2021: 9/10
- 2020: 8/10
- 2019: 9/10
- 2017: 10/10
Standard safety features on the 2024 Hyundai Elantra in Canada include a simple forward braking assist system, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, lane following assist, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor.
For the safest used buy, the 2017 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.
Should I buy a used Hyundai Elantra now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −12.49% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −11.07%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 33.2% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 33.1%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $22,546 CAD. The Hyundai Elantra offers a roomy cabin, strong value, and a broad mix of trims that make it easy to match your budget and priorities.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: As an affordable, mass-market car, you would reasonably expect the Elantra to offer one powertrain. Instead, there are four engines and five transmissions, each of which share a front-wheel drive (FWD) layout and four cylinders.
- Tech: A 10.25-inch touchscreen is now standard on the Luxury trim and above, while the Essential and Preferred have an 8-inch touchscreen; the smaller system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Safety: Standard safety features on the 2024 Hyundai Elantra in Canada include a simple forward braking assist system, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, lane following assist, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Absolutely the best car I have ever owned! I bought it in 2015 as a certified pre-owned vehicle and never once did I have any mechanical issues other than just this year the pump for the windshield wiper fluid finally went out. However, my boyfriend and I were able to repair that on our own. I planned on keeping this car a good long time as I take care of my vehicles. Unfortunately I was rear-ended in October and the vehicle was totaled. Im putting my faith once again into Hyundai and buying a certified pre-owned 2020 Kona that I have researched heavily. I loved my Elantra and found it to be an excellent vehicle. I very much hope to have the same exact experience with my Kona as when I test drove a 2018 which had the same engine as the 2020 I found it extremely responsive, fantastic breaking, smooth ride even on bumpy bad roads, major safety features, very powerful, and felt just like my Elantra to drive.

Why it stands out
The redesigned 2021 Hyundai Elantra stands out by delivering a blend of style, sophistication, space, and sportiness that goes well beyond what many buyers expect from a compact sedan. It is presented as proof that a compact car can offer performance, technology, and refinement without requiring a luxury badge, which is a big part of its appeal. For shoppers who want an affordable car that feels more polished than basic, the Elantra’s positioning is a major differentiator.
Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for its smooth ride, great fuel economy, comfortable seating, and strong value for the price. Those strengths make it easy to see why the 2021 Elantra would appeal to practical buyers who still want a pleasant daily driver. Some owners do wish for more features such as a moonroof on higher models, and a few feel the design could be a bit more stylish, so it is not without compromises.
