New & Used 2026 Subaru Outback for Sale nearBarrhead, AB

Is the 2026 Subaru Outback a good car?

The 2026 Subaru Outback earns an expert rating of 7.17/10. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Cost effectiveness.

It’s a strong fit if you want one vehicle that can handle daily commuting, comfortable highway driving, and rougher routes without giving up practicality. The redesign gives it a more SUV-like shape, but it still keeps the wagon-like usefulness that made the nameplate appealing in the first place. It also brings a broad spread of feature upgrades, plus a cabin that feels more modern and more usable than before.

The main trade-offs are that higher trim levels have diminishing returns, and the value story is strongest before you climb too far up the range. Even so, the market still shows 40.8% of listings as good or great deals, which supports the Outback’s appeal if you’re shopping carefully.

Is the 2026 Subaru Outback reliable?

The 2026 Subaru Outback is presented as a well-rounded, confidence-inspiring choice, with the expert assessment highlighting no notable flaws in the test-drive evaluation. It’s also described as composed on pavement, capable off-road, and easy to live with day to day.

Its powertrains are straightforward: a 2.5-litre boxer four-cylinder for the base model and a turbocharged 2.4-litre boxer four-cylinder for XT versions, both paired with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. The expert evaluation also notes that the CVT avoids the usual harsh drone under acceleration and that the base engine feels more capable than expected.

For long-term ownership, the main risk for used buyers is less about outright weakness and more about choosing the right trim and avoiding paying too much for features you may not need.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Subaru Outback?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Touring trim already brings attractive woven textile cabin materials, while higher trims add smoother materials and leather upholstery. The top Premier XT trim’s saddle brown interior palette is especially distinctive, and the Premium XT adds some premium items that the base model does not have.
• Powertrain: You can choose between a 2.5-litre boxer four-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, or a turbocharged 2.4-litre boxer four-cylinder with 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. Both use a CVT and standard AWD, and the base engine is described as more capable than expected.
• Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight suite includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic braking, automatic emergency steering, emergency stop assist, haptic steering wheel alerts, a driver attention monitor, adaptive headlights, and automatic high beams. The Premium XT trim enhances some standard features and adds a surround-view camera system, which is also on the Wilderness.
• Infotainment: The cabin uses a 12.1-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work wirelessly, and a wireless charging pad is available. Native cloud-based navigation is included with the Limited XT, Wilderness, and Premier XT trims with a one-year trial.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates fuel consumption as low as 8.5 L/100 km combined for the base engine and 9.7 L/100 km combined for XT models. The Wilderness is rated at 10.2 L/100 km combined.

Which 2026 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2026 Subaru Outback is offered in 4 trim levels: Touring, Premium XT, Wilderness, and Premier XT.

Here’s the short version:

• Touring: This is the entry point and the best-value choice if you want the Outback’s core strengths without paying for extras you may not need. It already gives you the practical cabin, standard AWD, and the full EyeSight safety suite.
• Premium XT: This trim adds more premium touches and driver assists, plus a surround-view camera system. It’s worth considering if you want more equipment, but the pricing makes it harder to justify than the Touring.
• Wilderness: Choose this if you want the most adventure-focused version, with 24 centimetres of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and electronically controlled suspension dampers. It also gets the surround-view camera system.
• Premier XT: This is the most upscale-feeling version, with the appealing saddle brown interior palette and native cloud-based navigation. It suits you if cabin presentation matters most, but the value case weakens as you move up the range.

The Premium XT trim enhances some of the standard safety features and adds a surround-view camera system, which is also equipped on the Wilderness.

Should I buy a 2026 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 40.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• The redesign gives you SUV-like styling with wagon practicality and strong off-road ability.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It offers a unique wagon shape with strong practicality and value.

The bottom line: If you want the newest Outback with the most up-to-date design, tech, and feature set, the 2026 is the better target. If your priority is value and you’re comfortable with the older model’s character, the 2025 remains a sensible alternative for price-sensitive buyers.
