Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 a good car?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 earns an 8.33/10 expert rating.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

It’s a refined update to Volvo’s flagship three-row SUV, with updated styling, materials, and feature offerings that make it feel more polished and complete. It suits you well if you want an upscale family SUV that stays easy to live with, especially if style, safety, and user-friendly technology matter most.

The main trade-offs are that semi-autonomous driving is not available, and the top-tier sound system costs extra even on the top trim.

With 29.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 reliable?

The XC90 is presented as a polished, well-sorted flagship SUV with mechanical tweaks aimed at improving ride comfort and handling.

Its standard suspension uses Frequency Selective Damping technology, which is designed to adapt mechanically to road conditions for improved ride comfort and stability. The B6 mild-hybrid is the more user-friendly, hassle-free choice because you do not need to manage charging to avoid fuel-economy penalties. The plug-in hybrid can work well if you keep it charged regularly and use its electric driving modes as intended.

The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the plug-in hybrid’s benefits depend on regular charging and consistent upkeep.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Volvo XC90?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core trim is the entry point, while Plus and Ultra packages add equipment and refinement. The base setup is already well-appointed, but the Ultra package brings the most premium cabin materials and the top-end audio and display upgrades.
• Powertrain: You can choose between the B6 mild-hybrid and the T8 plug-in hybrid. The B6 is the simpler, more hassle-free option, while the T8 adds an electric motor and an 18.8-kWh battery pack, plus up to 53 kilometres of pure electric range.
• Safety package: The standard advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection. Semi-autonomous highway driving is not available.
• Infotainment: The touchscreen is larger, sharper, and uses a new user interface with a fixed menu bar and contextual bar. Apple CarPlay is standard and works wirelessly or via USB-C cable, and the Ultra package adds a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The T8 plug-in hybrid offers a Natural Resources Canada-rated low of 3.8 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres when you keep it charged.

Which 2025 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultra.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you the XC90’s core strengths without pushing the price too far up. It makes the most sense if you want the XC90 experience and do not need the extra luxury touches.
• Plus: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds meaningful equipment without jumping all the way to the top. If you want a more premium feel while keeping spending in check, this is the trim to target.
• Ultra: This is the one to choose if you want the most upscale XC90 experience, including the richest cabin materials, the head-up display, and the upgraded audio options.

The Ultra package is also where the premium audio upgrade and the most luxurious interior materials are concentrated.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Volvo XC90?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to be choosy.

• Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 208 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.98% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $70,213 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $71,433 CAD sits slightly below last year's $85,019 CAD.

That price movement suggests the XC90 has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means sellers are facing a softer market than they were a year ago. If you plan to resell later, you should expect depreciation to remain a factor, especially if the market stays well supplied. For you as a buyer, that can improve negotiating leverage today, but it also means future resale value may not be especially strong relative to the original asking prices.

Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection. Those systems are described as operating smoothly and without erroneous interference during testing.

One important caveat is that the XC90 does not offer a hands-free highway-driving system, even though some rivals do.

Should I buy a 2025 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.98% compared with last year.
• It adds updated styling, materials, and feature offerings to an already strong XC90 formula.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $55,977 CAD, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $71,433 CAD average.
• It remains appealing and beautifully styled.

The bottom line: Choose the 2025 if you want the more polished, better-equipped XC90 and are comfortable paying more for the refresh. If your priority is saving money, the 2024 is the smarter value play, especially if you can find one in good condition and do not need the latest updates.
