Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 a good car?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 earns an 8.3/10 from our experts, and it builds on a well-regarded formula with updated styling, materials, feature offerings, and ride-focused mechanical tweaks.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

It remains a three-row midsize SUV that serves as Volvo’s flagship SUV, so it suits you if you want style and substance in a family-friendly package. Trade-offs include the lack of semi-autonomous driving and the fact that the top-tier sound system still costs extra even on the top trim.

With 33.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market offers a decent amount of value-oriented shopping opportunities.

Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 reliable?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is presented as a safety-focused, functional luxury SUV, and its standard systems are described as operating smoothly without erroneous intervention during testing.

Its standard advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection. The XC90 also uses a refreshed powertrain lineup with standard AWD and an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the B6 mild hybrid is described as the more user-friendly, hassle-free option because you do not need to manage charging.

If you choose the plug-in hybrid, you need to keep up with regular charging so the battery can keep doing its fuel-saving work. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the more complex electrified version depends on consistent charging and may be less convenient if you want simpler ownership.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Volvo XC90?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim gets quilted Nordico, while the Plus package keeps that material and the Ultra package adds more premium upholstery choices. The Ultra package also brings the top-end audio and head-up display, so you should check whether those features matter to you.
• Powertrain: You can choose between the B6 mild hybrid and the T8 plug-in hybrid. The B6 is the simpler, gas-only option, while the T8 adds an electric motor and an 18.8-kWh battery pack and offers up to 53 kilometres of pure electric range.
• Safety package: The XC90’s standard advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection. There is no hands-free highway-driving system.
• Infotainment: The touchscreen is larger, sharper, and uses a new user interface with a fixed menu bar and contextual bar. Apple CarPlay is standard and works wirelessly or via USB-C cable, and the Ultra package adds a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The T8 plug-in hybrid offers a Natural Resources Canada-rated low of 3.8 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres when you keep it charged.

Which 2025 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultra.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the XC90’s core strengths without stretching the budget as far as the higher packages. It suits you if you want the basic three-row luxury-SUV experience and do not need the extra comfort and audio upgrades.
• Plus: This is the best-value trim if you want a stronger mix of equipment and price. It adds meaningful comfort and convenience upgrades over Core without pushing you all the way to the top package.
• Ultra: Choose this if you want the most premium XC90 experience, including the top-end audio and available head-up display. It is the right pick if you care most about luxury features and are willing to pay for them.

The XC90’s standard safety equipment is strong across the range, but the higher trims add more convenience and luxury rather than changing the safety story dramatically.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Volvo XC90?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 223 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.66% compared with last year.

The current average of $68,738 CAD sits slightly below last year's $81,497 CAD.

That price movement suggests the XC90 has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means sellers may face more pressure than they did a year ago. If you own one, pricing it competitively will matter more than relying on past market strength. For future resale, the strongest examples should still benefit from the XC90’s reputation for style, safety, and family-friendly appeal.

Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 safe?

The standard advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection. The system is described as functional and smooth in operation, and the XC90’s safety-first approach is part of its appeal.

What it does not have is a hands-free highway-driving system, which is a notable gap versus some rivals.

Should I buy a 2025 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.66% compared with last year.
• The 2025 brings updated styling, materials, feature offerings, and mechanical tweaks aimed at improving ride comfort and handling.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $55,946 CAD, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $68,738 CAD average.
• It stands out for timeless design and a broad powertrain lineup.

The bottom line: If you want the freshest version of the XC90 with the latest updates, the 2025 is the better target. If your priority is saving money and you still want the XC90’s style and breadth of powertrain choice, the 2024 is the more price-sensitive path.
