Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 a good car?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 earns an 8.33/10 expert rating, and it remains a refined three-row midsize SUV with updated styling, materials, and feature offerings. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

It is especially appealing if you want a premium-feeling family SUV with a strong safety image and user-friendly technology. The trade-offs are that semi-autonomous driving is not available, and the top-tier sound system still costs extra even on the top trim.

With 28.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market offers a fair amount of value-oriented shopping opportunity.

Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 reliable?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is presented as a cautious, functional SUV that prioritises dependable everyday operation over flashy tech. Its standard advanced driver-assistance systems are described as operating smoothly, and the vehicle’s safety reputation remains a major strength.

The performance side is framed as user-friendly, especially in B6 form, which avoids the need to manage charging for fuel-economy benefits. The plug-in hybrid adds electric capability, but it needs to be plugged in regularly to keep that advantage working as intended.

Volvo also positions the XC90 as a premium but not ostentatious ownership proposition, which can help if you want a refined long-term family vehicle. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is that the more complex plug-in hybrid setup can demand more attention than the mild-hybrid version.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Volvo XC90?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core version is the entry point, while Plus and Ultra packages add equipment and refinement. The base setup is still well-appointed, but the higher packages bring more of the XC90’s premium character.
• Powertrain: You can choose between the B6 mild hybrid and the T8 plug-in hybrid. The B6 is the simpler, more hassle-free option, while the T8 adds an electric motor and battery for stronger output and short electric driving.
• Safety package: Standard advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection. Semi-autonomous highway driving is not available.
• Infotainment: The touchscreen is larger, sharper, and uses a new user interface with a fixed menu bar and contextual bar. Apple CarPlay is standard and works wirelessly or via USB-C, and the Ultra package adds a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The plug-in hybrid offers up to 3.8 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres when charged and used as intended. The B6 is the more user-friendly choice if you do not want to manage charging.

Which 2025 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultra.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the value starting point if you want the XC90’s core strengths without stretching to the pricier packages. It gives you the essential luxury-SUV experience and is the best fit if you want to keep the purchase more grounded.
• Plus: This is the trim to consider if you want a better balance of equipment and price. It adds meaningful upgrades over Core and should be the best-value choice for many shoppers.
• Ultra: Choose this if you want the most upscale XC90 experience, including the richest feature set and the available premium audio and display upgrades.

The Ultra package is the one that can be optioned with second-row captain’s chairs, and the top-tier sound system remains an extra-cost option even there.

• Inventory: There are 189 listings available.

The current average of $71,160 CAD sits slightly below last year's $83,970 CAD.

That price movement suggests the XC90 has become more accessible for buyers, but it also means sellers may need to be more realistic on asking price. If you own one, the current market points to softer resale conditions than a year ago. For future sellers, the upside is that the XC90 still carries premium appeal, which should help it hold interest even as prices ease.

The main caveat is that it does not offer a hands-free highway-driving system, which some rival midsize three-row SUVs do provide.

Should I buy a 2025 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 28.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.25% compared with last year.
• The refreshed styling, materials, and feature updates make it the most polished version of this generation.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $56,179 CAD, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $71,160 CAD average.
• It is a timelessly styled luxury SUV with strong appeal inside and out.

The bottom line: Choose the 2025 if you want the most updated XC90 with the strongest mix of refinement, safety, and feature improvements. If your priority is saving money, the 2024 remains a compelling alternative because it delivers the XC90’s core design and luxury appeal at a lower price.
