Is the 2025 Mazda CX-90 a good car?

The 2025 Mazda CX-90 earns an expert rating of 6.2/10.

The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

It stands out in the midsize three-row SUV segment because it offers unusual powertrain choices, a stylish design, premium interior materials, and a more upscale feel than many family SUVs. The trade-offs are an underwhelming base engine and technology that can feel unintuitive.

With a 29.4% good-and-great-deal share, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.

Is the 2025 Mazda CX-90 reliable?

The 2025 Mazda CX-90 is presented as a premium-feeling family SUV with strong safety credentials and a focus on driving enjoyment, but its refinement is mixed. The expert evaluation notes that the drivetrain can feel unpredictable when cold, and the transmission behaviour can be fussy.

The performance assessment also points to unwanted engine surge and delayed response in some situations, which can undermine confidence in daily use. On the plus side, Mazda includes two years of complimentary Mazda Connected Services, which helps offset some ownership costs early on.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the CX-90’s refinement issues may remain part of the ownership experience even if the vehicle is otherwise well maintained.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Mazda CX-90?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The CX-90’s cabin and feature set feel more upscale as you move up the range, while the lowest trims use a smaller infotainment screen and miss some of the richer materials and convenience touches.
• Powertrain: You can choose between the standard-output 3.3 Turbo, the high-output 3.3 Turbo, and the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The standard engine makes 280 horsepower, while the high-output version delivers 319 hp, or 340 hp with premium gas.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights. Higher trims add steering assist for blind-spot monitoring, emergency lane-keeping assist, safe exit warning, front cross-traffic alert, front parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system.
• Infotainment: Higher trims can bring a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, but the native Mazda Connect system still relies on the centre-console knob and buttons rather than touchscreen control. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and the system is touch-sensitive when you use them.
• Fuel efficiency: The official Natural Resources Canada rating is 9.3 L/100 km combined with the standard-output engine and 9.5 L/100 km combined with the high-output version. The plug-in hybrid is rated at 9.4 L/100 km combined once the battery is depleted, with 42 kilometres of electric range.

Which 2025 Mazda CX-90 trim should I buy?

The 2025 Mazda CX-90 is offered in 5 trim levels: GS-L, GS, GT, GT-P, and Signature.

Here's the short version:

• GS-L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the CX-90’s style, safety, and unusual powertrain choices without stretching your budget.
• GS: This trim is the better value if you want a more balanced mix of equipment and price, while still staying within the core CX-90 experience.
• GT: This is the sweet spot for many shoppers because it moves you further into the premium-feeling side of the CX-90 without jumping to the most expensive trims.
• GT-P: Choose this if you want the high-output 3.3 Turbo, since that engine is standard here and adds more punch.
• Signature: This is the most upscale choice, with the richest materials and the most complete feature set, but it is best for buyers who are willing to pay for the top-end experience.

Mazda adds more advanced safety equipment as you move up the trim ladder, including steering assist for blind-spot monitoring, emergency lane-keeping assist, safe exit warning, front cross-traffic alert, front parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Mazda CX-90?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 436 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.00% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $42,553 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 Mazda CX-90's resale value?

The current average of $42,553 CAD sits slightly below last year's $50,660 CAD.

That price drop suggests the CX-90 is currently more buyer-friendly than it was a year ago. If you plan to sell later, you should expect resale value to depend heavily on trim, condition, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.

For you as a used buyer, the softer market can work in your favour now, but it also means future depreciation may remain a factor if you choose a higher-priced trim.

Is the 2025 Mazda CX-90 safe?

The 2025 Mazda CX-90 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and five-star ratings in all crash tests conducted by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as well as a four-star rollover resistance rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Mazda includes a long list of standard driver aids: forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights.

Higher trims add steering assist to blind-spot monitoring, emergency lane-keeping assist, safe exit warning, front cross-traffic alert, front parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system. Cruising and Traffic Support is also available on higher trims, pairing adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assist for hands-on highway driving.

Should I buy a 2025 Mazda CX-90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.00% compared with last year.
• The 2025 combines unusual powertrain choices with strong safety ratings and a more upscale feel than many rivals.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $40,395 CAD, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $42,553 CAD average.
• It is a three-row crossover with excellent handling and a driver-focused character.

The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year pricing context and the current market’s softer average, the 2025 is the better starting point. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2024 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the CX-90’s core appeal.
