Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Generally — you’re looking at a 4.2/5 user rating and a 4.5/10 expert rating, which points to a vehicle that resonates strongly with owners even if it has clear limitations. The standout strength is Form and function at 6/10.

Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, power, and appearance, and they also like the improved ride quality plus features such as heated seats and blind spot monitoring. The 4Runner’s rugged, off-road-focused character and cargo space make it especially appealing if you value utility over polish.

The trade-offs are just as clear: it can feel loud in daily driving, and the expert review calls out poor handling and sluggish performance. In other words, this suits you best if you want a dependable, capable SUV with real off-road credentials rather than a modern, refined commuter.

Only 37.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is selective rather than flooded with bargains.

Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable and trouble-free in the ways that matter most to long-term shoppers: it is praised for its durability, spaciousness, and strong everyday appeal. The expert review also reinforces that reputation by describing it as reliable and durable, which lines up with the model’s long-standing reputation.

On the ownership side, the 4Runner’s age means you should pay close attention to wear, maintenance history, and how hard it has been used off-road. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the core reputation and more about finding one that has been cared for properly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The range-topping TRD Pro adds underbody skid plates, all-terrain tires, and a beefy tubular roof rack, while the Limited also gets a surround-view camera system. The base setup is much more old-school, with a small eight-inch infotainment touchscreen and a cabin that leans heavily on hard plastics.
• Powertrain: Every 2024 4Runner uses a 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. It is standard with 4WD in Canada, and the TRD Pro includes a two-speed transfer case.
• Safety package: Toyota’s driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. The TRD Pro and 4Runner Limited trims also come with a surround-view camera system.
• Infotainment: You get standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the touchscreen is only eight inches and can be awkward to use while driving. The system also lacks some of the off-road-specific apps and gauges found in some rivals.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates it at 14.8 L/100 km in the city, 12.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 13.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2024 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop carefully and be ready to move when you find a strong listing.

• Deal availability: 37.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 148 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.09% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $55,652 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $57,431 CAD sits slightly below last year's $62,487 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also means a future seller may face a more competitive resale environment if the market keeps drifting down. The 4Runner’s age and the expectation of a redesigned replacement also matter, because newer alternatives can put pressure on used values.

Even so, the model’s loyal following and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2024 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings for overall and frontal crash protection, five-star ratings in side impacts, and three-star ratings in rollover evaluations from NHTSA. The IIHS gives it a Good result for the original moderate frontal overlap crash test and side protection tests, but the newer small overlap frontal test includes Marginal and Poor results.

It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota’s safety suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. The TRD Pro and 4Runner Limited trims also add a surround-view camera system.

The main caveat is that the 4Runner’s safety performance is mixed, especially in the newer small overlap frontal test, so you should not assume it matches newer rivals on crash protection.

Should I buy a 2024 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2024 if:

• 37.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.09% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It remains a rugged, off-road-capable SUV with strong reliability and durability.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $55,106 CAD, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $57,431 CAD average.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Consider the 2025 if:

• At $69,882 CAD, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $57,431 CAD average.
• It brings a full redesign with more capability, power, comfort, and technology.

The bottom line: If you want the current model-year 4Runner at a softer price, the 2024 is the practical pick. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2023 offers a lower entry point, while the 2025 is the better choice if you want the redesigned version and can stretch your budget.
