Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Generally — the 2024 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.17/5 user rating and a 4.5/10 expert rating, which points to a vehicle that strongly suits a specific kind of buyer. The standout strength is Form and function at 6/10.

Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, power, and appealing looks, and they also highlight the improved ride quality and useful features like heated seats and blind spot monitoring. The 4Runner’s rugged, off-road-focused character also fits shoppers who want something built for tougher use rather than the latest trends.

The trade-offs are clear: it trails newer rivals in technology, safety features, fuel efficiency, and power, and the driving experience is held back by poor handling and sluggish performance. If you want a durable SUV with plenty of cargo space and all-terrain capability, it still makes sense; if you want a more modern daily driver, you may find it dated. Even so, 21.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with strong satisfaction around its spaciousness, power, and durability-minded character. The expert assessment also reinforces that reputation by describing it as a vehicle with a strong reputation for reliability and durability.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic toughness and more about living with an older design that can feel behind the curve in everyday use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base model is more stripped back, while higher trims add more convenience and capability. The TRD Pro stands out with underbody skid plates, all-terrain tires, and a beefy tubular roof rack, while the Limited and TRD Pro also add a surround-view camera system.
• Powertrain: Every 2024 4Runner uses a 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. The TRD Pro comes standard with 4WD and a two-speed transfer case.
• Safety package: The 4Runner includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. The TRD Pro and 4Runner Limited trims also come with a surround-view camera system.
• Infotainment: You get an eight-inch touchscreen with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the screen is small and can be challenging to use while driving. The TRD Pro also adds a 15-speaker JBL premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: It is rated at 14.8 L/100 km in the city, 12.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 13.8 L/100 km combined.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.

• Deal availability: 21.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 133 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.67% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $55,658 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $56,505 CAD sits slightly below last year's $63,969 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy more cautiously now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values continue to ease. The current year-round range still leaves room for well-kept examples to command stronger prices, especially if they are equipped and presented well. Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it is time to sell.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2024 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings for overall and frontal crash protection, five-star ratings for side impacts, and three-star ratings in rollover evaluations from NHTSA. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it its highest score of Good for the original moderate frontal overlap crash test and side protection tests, but the newer small overlap frontal test includes worrying Marginal and Poor results.

It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

You get adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning as standard driver-assistance features. The TRD Pro and Limited trims also add a surround-view camera system.

The main caveat is that the 4Runner’s safety performance is mixed, especially in the newer small overlap frontal test, so you should weigh its rugged strengths against those results if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2024 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2024 if:

• 21.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.67% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It remains a rugged, off-road-focused SUV with strong reliability and durability.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $54,899 CAD, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $56,505 CAD average.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Consider the 2025 if:

• At $71,234 CAD, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $56,505 CAD average.
• It brings a full redesign with more capability, power, comfort, and technology.

The bottom line: If you want the current model-year 4Runner’s rugged character and can find a well-priced example, the 2024 is the safer buy than paying up for the redesigned 2025. If your priority is value and you can live with the older platform, the 2023 is the more budget-friendly path.
