CarGurus Analysis: 2024 Ford Explorer
Summary
With 80 currently listed for sale and an average price of $36,459 CAD, 26.3% of 2024 Ford Explorer listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2024 Ford Explorer 3 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2024 Ford Explorer stands out as a midsize SUV that has moved well beyond its rugged origins into a more polished, more premium role. In this generation, it rides on the CD6 platform shared only with the Lincoln Aviator, and its rear-wheel drive bias gives it better handling than any previous Explorer without sacrificing smoothness or refinement. That makes it one of the more engaging family SUVs to drive, especially for buyers who want something that feels more composed on the road than the Explorer’s earlier generations.
Performance is a major part of the appeal. The entry-level 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder makes 300 horsepower, while the optional 3.0L EcoBoost V6 with twin turbochargers develops 365 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. The ST trim raises output to 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, and the hybrid version available from 2020 to 2023 combined a 3.3-litre hybrid V6 with a 1.5-kWh battery pack and electric motor for 318 horsepower and a combined fuel consumption figure of 9.6 litres per 100 kilometres. AWD models also get a Terrain Management System, which adds useful traction management for changing conditions.
The 2024 Explorer is also appealing because it brings a strong mix of convenience and family-friendly features. Even the XLT includes push-button start, keyless entry, and Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assistance features such as blind-spot information with cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, forward automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and forward collision warnings. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and at least four USB ports are standard, and seating can be configured for up to seven passengers or for six with second-row captain’s chairs. Its main drawbacks are that some advanced features require higher trims or option packages, and the initial 2020 models had a relatively high number of gremlins, even though the latest Explorers have a better reliability record than their predecessors.

| Year-Round High | $49,140 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $49,140 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −14.47% |

There are 407 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2024 Ford Explorer a good car?
The 2024 Ford Explorer is a balanced choice if you want a midsize SUV that feels more composed on the road than earlier Explorers, with a rear-wheel-drive-based platform and a more premium character. Its user rating is 3/5, and it also brings useful family-focused equipment such as seating for up to seven, standard smartphone integration, and Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assistance features. If that mix of driving polish and everyday practicality fits your needs, it is worth a close look. Good and great deals account for 34.2% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2024 Ford Explorer reliable?
The 2024 Ford Explorer is described as having a better reliability record than its predecessors, even though the earliest models in this generation had a relatively high number of gremlins. It also benefits from a more mature version of the CD6 platform and a layout that has been refined over time. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that higher-trim features and earlier-generation issues can make condition and maintenance history especially important.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully rather than rush.
- Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 407 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.47% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $42,029 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2024 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $42,029 CAD sits slightly below last year's $49,140 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favour, which can make the Explorer easier to shop now than it was a year ago. For a future seller, that also means resale expectations should stay realistic if you plan to trade in or list privately later. If you buy well today, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pain, but the current trend still points to a market that rewards patience and careful timing.
Should I buy a 2024 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2024 if:
- 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.47% compared with last year.
Consider the 2025 if:
- At $51,648 CAD, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $42,029 CAD average.
- It adds updated infotainment, improved interior quality, and a simplified trim lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2024 is the stronger starting point because pricing has eased and inventory is healthy. If you are willing to spend more for newer tech and a fresher cabin, the 2025 is the better upgrade path. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2024 is the one to target first.
