Why it stands out
The 2024 Ford Explorer stands out as a midsize SUV that has moved well beyond its rugged origins into a more polished, more premium role. In this generation, it rides on the CD6 platform shared only with the Lincoln Aviator, and its rear-wheel-drive bias gives it better handling than any previous Explorer without sacrificing smoothness or refinement. That makes it one of the more engaging family SUVs to drive, especially because Ford pairs the chassis with a 300-horsepower 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder that is described as surprisingly capable. Buyers who want more muscle can look to the optional 3.0L EcoBoost V6 with twin turbochargers, while the ST trim raises output further to 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque.
The 2024 Explorer is also appealing because it offers a broad spread of trims and equipment. Even the XLT includes push-button start, keyless entry, and Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assistance features such as automatic high beams, blind-spot information system with cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping alert, lane-keeping assist, forward automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and forward collision warnings. Higher trims can add adaptive cruise control, lane centring, evasive steering assist, panoramic twin-panel moonroofs, and Bang & Olufsen sound systems. All Explorers get Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and at least four USB ports, and seating can be configured for up to seven passengers or for six with second-row captain’s chairs.
There are a few trade-offs, though. The hybrid version was available from 2020 to 2023, so it is not part of the 2024 lineup, and Ford notes that many trims will be eliminated in 2025 as production is streamlined. Even so, the 2024 Explorer remains attractive for shoppers who want a roomy, well-equipped SUV that is more enjoyable to drive than earlier Explorers and has a better reliability record than its predecessors, while still offering useful off-road capability in Timberline form and strong performance in ST guise.
