Is the 2023 Volvo XC90 a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 5/5 user-rated SUV with an expert rating of 8/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

The XC90’s appeal is rooted in its understated luxury, beautiful interior, and forward-thinking infotainment setup. It feels especially well suited to you if you want a refined three-row crossover that prioritises style and sophistication over flash.

The main trade-offs are limited cargo space and a third row that is difficult to access. The technology can also feel too touchscreen-dependent for some drivers.

With 32.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s a decent amount of market value to be found if you shop carefully.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Volvo’s reputation for safety and the XC90’s strong expert safety score both support confidence in day-to-day ownership. The mild-hybrid powertrain is designed to smooth operation while nudging efficiency forward, and the auto stop-start system is described as almost imperceptible.

The XC90’s standard equipment and premium build should help it feel durable over time, but used buyers should still pay close attention to how the touchscreen-heavy cabin and complex luxury features have aged.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volvo XC90?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core trim starts the range, while Plus and Ultimate add more equipment and can be configured with six-passenger seating for an extra cost. The cabin is elegant across the range, but the standard feature set is strongest where you move up from the entry trim.
• Powertrain: For 2023, the XC90 uses B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains in Canada, replacing the older T5 and T6 engines. The setup favours smoother operation and modest efficiency gains over outright fuel-economy improvement.
• Safety package: Pilot Assist is supported by standard blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. These features are standard equipment on the 2023 XC90.
• Infotainment: You get a 9-inch vertical touchscreen with Google OS, Bluetooth, Google Maps, Google Assistant, and built-in Android Auto functionality. Apple CarPlay works too, but the system can still feel too dependent on the screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The mild-hybrid setup brings only modest fuel-economy gains, with benefits described as no more than a few litres at most.

Which 2023 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the XC90’s core luxury feel, standard all-wheel drive, and the standard safety and infotainment foundation. It makes sense if you want the XC90 experience without stretching for extras.
• Plus: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it builds on the Core with more equipment while staying below the top trim’s price. It’s the trim to focus on if you want a more complete luxury experience without going all the way to Ultimate.
• Ultimate: This is the most richly equipped version, and it suits you if you want the most polished XC90 presentation and are willing to pay for it.

Standard safety equipment is strong across the range, including Pilot Assist support, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist.

Should I buy a 2023 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.48% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2023 update brings B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains and Google-based infotainment.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $41,432 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $50,173 CAD average.
• It offers an elegant, tech-forward cabin with strong safety appeal.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $56,179 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $50,173 CAD average.
• It carries over with timeless styling and a refined, comfortable luxury-SUV character.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current features and softened pricing, the 2023 is the smart starting point. If your priority is lower purchase cost, the 2022 is the better value path; if you want the newer model-year premium and don’t mind paying more, the 2024 is the alternative to compare.
