Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — the 2023 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.27/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its reliability, strong resale value, and rugged versatility. They also highlight its sturdy build and off-road capability, which line up with the Tacoma’s tough, purposeful character.

The trade-offs are clear: the cabin can feel tight, the technology is dated, and comfort is not its strongest suit. That makes it a better fit if you want a durable, capable truck rather than the most refined daily driver.

With its compact-pickup size and adventure-friendly personality, it suits you best if you want a truck that can handle work, weekend hauling, and rougher terrain. 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively.

Owners describe it as reliable, dependable, and built for long-term use, with many pointing to its sturdy construction and trouble-free reputation. The expert assessment also reinforces that view by calling out its bullet-proof reliability and durable character.

Toyota’s ownership appeal is helped by the Tacoma’s reputation for lasting value, and the truck’s straightforward mechanical setup supports that image. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age-related wear may show up sooner in comfort, noise, and tech than in core durability.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Tacoma?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base truck is spartan, while higher trims add leather upholstery, soft-touch materials, and more distinctive off-road hardware. If you want the most complete version, the TRD Pro stands out with underbody skid pads, a TRD-tuned suspension, a locking rear differential, and a unique appearance package.
• Powertrain: In Canada, you get the 3.5-litre V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, plus a six-speed automatic or available six-speed manual. It is capable, but it is not especially quick, and road noise can be noticeable.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring, rear- and side parking distance sensors, and a surround-view camera, but lane-keeping assist and rear automatic emergency braking are not included.
• Infotainment: Base models use a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get an 8-inch unit. Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM are included, and wireless charging is available on higher trims.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates 13.0 L/100 km in city driving, 10.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 11.9 L/100 km combined. Manual models are rated at 13.8/11.4/12.7 L/100 km, while TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro versions rise slightly to 13.8/11.7/12.9 L/100 km.

Which 2023 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, Trail Special Edition.

Here's the short version:

• SR: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Tacoma’s core toughness at the lowest price, but you give up the richer materials and extra equipment found higher up the range.
• SR5: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds more everyday usability while staying well below the off-road-focused trims.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more polished look and a step up in equipment without going all-in on the most rugged hardware.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the better pick if you want the Tacoma’s off-road character to be a priority, with the hardware and tuning to match.
• TRD Pro: This is the most capable and most distinctive version, with underbody skid pads, a TRD-tuned suspension, a locking rear differential, and a unique grille and badging.
• Trail Special Edition: This suits you if you want a more adventure-flavoured Tacoma with a distinct appearance and a trim-specific personality.

Toyota’s safety package is standard across the lineup, but higher trims add blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and a surround-view camera.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Tacoma?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 436 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.14% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $47,352 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $48,070 CAD sits slightly below last year's $50,674 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also suggests the market has adjusted downward from where it was a year ago. If you plan to sell later, that means your return will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim desirability.

The Tacoma’s reputation for reliability and strong owner satisfaction should continue to support demand. Well-kept examples, especially those with sought-after equipment, are likely to remain easier to move than less desirable trucks.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.27/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma was not awarded a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it scored four-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in side-impact tests but lower marks in frontal crash and rollover tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Higher trims can also add blind-spot monitoring, rear- and side parking distance sensors, and a surround-view camera.

The main caveat is that the Tacoma does not include lane-keeping assist or rear automatic emergency braking, so its driver-assistance suite is less comprehensive than some rivals.

Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.14% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.27/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong reliability, rugged capability, and a broad trim range.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $43,600 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $48,070 CAD average.
• It offers modern tech and safety features while staying useful for commuting and weekend adventures.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $53,769 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $48,070 CAD average.
• It brings a ground-up redesign with a newer platform and a more modern powertrain.

The bottom line: If you want the familiar Tacoma formula, the 2023 is the safer middle ground between price and capability. If you are shopping on a tighter budget, the 2022 is the value play; if you want the newest hardware, the 2024 is the upgrade path.
