Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — the 2023 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.27/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, sturdy build, and off-road capability, and they also tend to value its strong resale appeal. The Tacoma’s rugged personality and versatility come through clearly, especially if you want a truck that feels tough and familiar rather than overly polished.

The trade-offs are just as clear: the cabin can feel tight, and the technology is dated compared with newer rivals. That makes it a better fit if you prioritise durability, character, and weekend capability over modern refinement.

With 32.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market choice to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

User feedback points to reliability, dependability, and a trouble-free ownership experience as major reasons people stick with the Tacoma. The expert assessment also reinforces that reputation by describing it as having a hard-earned, bullet-proof reliability image.

Toyota’s ownership appeal is strengthened by its durable, proven character, and the Tacoma’s reputation suggests you can count on it over the long term. For used buyers, the main risk is less about core dependability and more about accepting age-related compromises in comfort and technology.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Tacoma?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base truck is spartan, while higher trims add leather upholstery, soft-touch materials, heated front seats, and more distinctive off-road hardware. If you want the most rugged version, the TRD Pro adds underbody skid pads, a TRD-tuned suspension, a locking rear differential, 16-inch alloy wheels, a TRD sport exhaust, and unique exterior details.
• Powertrain: In Canada, you get the 3.5-litre V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic or available six-speed manual. Standard four-wheel drive is included, and the truck is not especially quick.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring, rear- and side parking distance sensors, and a surround-view camera, but lane-keeping assist and rear automatic emergency braking are not included.
• Infotainment: Base trims use a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get an 8-inch unit. All versions include Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio, and wireless charging is available on higher trims.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates 13.0 L/100 km in city driving, 10.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 11.9 L/100 km combined. Manual-transmission models are rated at 13.8/11.4/12.7 L/100 km, while TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro versions rise slightly to 13.8/11.7/12.9 L/100 km.

Which 2023 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: base standard package, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, Trail Special Edition, and Nightshade Edition.

Here's the short version:

• base standard package: This is the simplest Tacoma, and it makes sense if you want the lowest entry point and can live without the extra comfort and off-road equipment found higher up the range.
• SR5: This is the sensible step up if you want a more rounded everyday truck without jumping into the more specialised trims.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more style- and road-focused middle ground with more equipment than the lower trims.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds meaningful capability without going all the way to the most expensive model.
• Trail Special Edition: Pick this if you want a more distinctive Tacoma with a specific adventure-oriented flavour.
• Nightshade Edition: This suits you if appearance matters most and you want a more upscale-looking Tacoma.

The TRD Pro is the most extreme off-road choice, with the strongest hardware and the most specialised character in the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Tacoma?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 428 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.45% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $47,323 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $48,138 CAD sits slightly below last year's $50,380 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Tacoma is still in demand, but buyers have a bit more leverage than they did a year ago. For a future seller, that means you may not see the same peak pricing as before, especially if your truck is not in a sought-after trim or condition.

Even so, the Tacoma’s reputation for reliability and its broad appeal help support long-term value. Well-kept examples should remain easier to move than many rivals, particularly if they have the right equipment and a clean history.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.27/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma was not awarded a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in side-impact tests and lower marks in frontal crash and rollover tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Higher trims can also add blind-spot monitoring, rear- and side parking distance sensors, and a surround-view camera.

The main safety caveat is that the Tacoma does not include lane-keeping assist or rear automatic emergency braking, and its crash-test results trail the best performers in the segment.

Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.45% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.27/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It combines proven reliability with strong off-road capability and a familiar, rugged personality.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $43,633 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $48,138 CAD average.
• It offers useful everyday versatility with modern tech and safety features.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $53,571 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $48,138 CAD average.
• It brings a full redesign, a more modern platform, and standard advanced driver-assistance tech.

The bottom line: If you want the Tacoma’s proven formula and a better current-market price than last year, the 2023 is the balanced choice. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the value play; if you want the newest structure and features, the 2024 is the upgrade path.
