CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota Sienna
overall

Summary
With 43 currently listed for sale and an average price of $51,446 CAD, 37.2% of 2023 Toyota Sienna listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota Sienna 4.11 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Sienna stands out in the minivan segment because it uses a standard hybrid engine, which gives it a clear efficiency advantage over many family haulers. It is also appealing for shoppers who want the everyday usefulness that minivans are known for, with the kind of practicality, convenience, and cargo space that make them especially well suited to busy households. In that sense, the Sienna’s main draw is straightforward: it is built to make family life easier while still delivering strong fuel economy.
That usefulness comes with a few trade-offs. The 2023 Toyota Sienna is praised for being spacious and for including standard advanced safety features, but it is also described as having second-row seats that are not removable, an irritating transmission, and sluggish acceleration. Owners likewise tend to value its fuel efficiency, spaciousness, and comfort, although some note concerns about lack of power, engine noise during acceleration, and mixed results from the Apple CarPlay and backup camera.

Awesome ride, comfort and great mpg. Good looking too. However, backup camera resolution can be improved. Spare tire should come as standard in a minivan.

2023 Sienna XLE 7 passenger AWD My Grandchildrens Favorite! It has lots of room..they can slide the seats back and have living room comfort. They like the rear USB charging ports, rear AC/heat controls, and they can always fit friends back there with them, and their gear. I like it because its comfortable, safe, and gets 35 miles per gallon. The All Wheel Drive is best..most of those available are Front wheel drive. In recent snowstorms, I saw many other vehicles slid off the road, but I never spun a wheel with the AWD. Fantastic resale value, if I ever want to sell it, such as if my needs change. The hybrid is quiet, smooth, and, actually has more horsepower than the older Sienna V6, because the battery assists with extra power when in sport mode. Now, for what I dont like: Irritating Apple car play, when you plug the maps in, you have to wait, and wait, for the directions to appear. Too slow. Apparently, there is no way to upgrade to Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which apparenly solves that problem. Its unclear why Toyota cant/wont allow the software upgrade to make the Apple Car play faster and not frustrating. The back part of the van is difficult to enter, especially for large adults with knee problems. Young adults, under 200 pounds wont have a problem. We carry a step stool so my wife can enter the rear of the van when desired. I do agree, the 3rd seat, when folded down, kind of bounces, unless you set something on it like groceries, suitcases, cargo mat, etc, but that has never caused us any problem. While I have read of unable to start problems because the battery ran down mostly due to defective foot activated door sensors in the 2022 model, I have not had the problem in the 2023 Sienna. For that reason, I recommend avoiding the 2022 Sienna, and go with 2023. I have no desire to go out to my van, and then not be able to start it because the battery is dead, and for that to happen multiple times. I have never had a dead battery in my 2023. It works great every time, except for the issues I mentioned, above. Lastly, my Sienna came with only one key, this is as convient as a broken leg, and they take forever to get me the promised new key...which has never arrived.

Is the 2023 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Generally — you’re looking at a 4.11/5 user-rated minivan with an expert score of 7.67/10. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its fuel efficiency, spaciousness, and comfort, and the hybrid setup is a major draw for families who want practicality without giving up strong economy. The Sienna also fits well if you want everyday usefulness, cargo space, and a family-friendly layout that makes busy routines easier.
The trade-offs are clear: the expert review calls out sluggish acceleration and an irritating transmission, and owners also mention lack of power and some technology frustrations. Even so, the Sienna’s mix of efficiency, space, and comfort makes it a strong fit if you value family utility over driving excitement.
Only 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is somewhat selective rather than broadly bargain-heavy.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 4.11/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in day-to-day family use, with repeated praise for its fuel efficiency, comfort, and spaciousness. That kind of consistent satisfaction usually matters more than flashier features when you’re planning to keep a minivan for the long haul.
The expert review also describes the Sienna’s technology as reliable, even if the interface itself feels dated. Toyota’s hybrid setup and family-hauler focus suggest a used example should be a sensible long-term ownership bet, provided you’re comfortable with the model’s performance compromises.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Sienna?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and 25th Anniversary Special Edition each sit at different points in the lineup. The XLE is the value-minded choice if you want standard power-sliding doors and a power liftgate with kick sensors, while the Limited brings a more upscale feel. Base-trim shoppers should pay close attention to feature gaps if those convenience items matter to you.
- Powertrain: Every model uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid system with two front-mounted electric motors, plus a third rear-mounted electric motor on AWD trims. The setup is efficient and well suited to family use, but it is not especially quick.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is part of the standard safety equipment, and the Sienna includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Those features are standard, which is a major plus for family buyers.
- Infotainment: You get a 9-inch touchscreen, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, an optional navigation system, and seven USB ports. The system uses a wired connection for CarPlay and Android Auto, and the interface can feel dated.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the AWD model at 6.8 L/100 km city, 6.6 highway, and 6.7 combined. With FWD, it is rated at 6.6 L/100 km city, 6.5 highway, and 6.6 combined.
Which 2023 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota Sienna is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and 25th Anniversary Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point if you want the Sienna’s hybrid efficiency and family practicality at the lowest rung of the lineup. It makes sense if you mainly want the core minivan experience and can live without the extra convenience features found higher up.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds standard power-sliding doors and a power liftgate with kick sensors. If you want the most useful everyday upgrades without stretching too far, this is the one to focus on.
- XSE: This trim leans more toward style, with sportier positioning and 20-inch wheels on the FWD version. It suits you if you want a more distinctive look while keeping the Sienna’s family-friendly fundamentals.
- Limited: This is the upscale choice, and it is the trim to consider if you want a more premium-feeling Sienna. It also gets the standard 12-speaker JBL premium audio system in Canada.
- 25th Anniversary Special Edition: This trim sits just below the Limited in price and gives you a commemorative step up from the mainstream trims. It is worth a look if you want something a bit more special without going all the way to the top.
Toyota’s standard safety equipment is a major selling point across the lineup, so even lower trims give you a strong safety foundation.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Sienna?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should have some room to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 151 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.16% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $49,555 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $50,623 CAD sits slightly below last year's $55,726 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can be helpful if you’re buying now but less favourable if you’re planning to sell soon. A softer market often means future resale gains may be more limited unless demand strengthens again.
Even so, the Sienna’s strong owner satisfaction and family-focused appeal should help it stay relevant with used buyers. Efficient minivans with good reputations tend to hold attention better than less practical alternatives.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.11/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sienna safe?
The 2023 Toyota Sienna earns a Top Safety Pick+ designation from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and the Sienna includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. That is a strong standard safety list for a family vehicle.
The main safety takeaway is that you get a very well-equipped minivan right from the start, with no need to move up the trim ladder just to access core driver-assistance features.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.16% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.11/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It combines hybrid efficiency with standard safety features and family-friendly practicality.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $47,128 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $50,623 CAD average.
- It keeps the same successful hybrid formula after the redesign.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $54,883 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $50,623 CAD average.
- It adds a more modern, efficiency-focused family-hauler approach with optional all-wheel drive.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, efficiency, and standard safety, the 2023 is the smart middle ground. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2022 is the value play; if you want to spend more for the newer model-year feel, the 2024 is the step up.
