Is the 2023 RAM 1500 a good car?

Yes — owners rate it 4.7/5, and our experts give it 7.2/10 overall. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

The gas engine comes with a five-year/100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty, which helps reduce early ownership risk for used buyers.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 RAM 1500?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans Tradesman, Big Horn, Sport, Rebel, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, Limited, and TRX. Lower trims miss some of the upscale touches found higher up, while the Limited brings leather, open-pore wood, metallic trim, and a 12-inch portrait-oriented screen.
• Powertrain: You can get rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, with a 3.6-litre V6 with eTorque standard on lower trims, a 5.7-litre Hemi V8 optional on lower trims and standard on upper trims, and a 3.0-litre EcoDiesel available on most trims. The V8 brings strong off-the-line power, while the eTorque system adds efficiency and extra low-speed torque.
• Safety package: Forward collision warning is not standard, and blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning are optional or bundled. If equipped, blind-spot monitoring can cover the length of a trailer.
• Infotainment: Lower trims get a 5-inch screen, mid trims typically use an 8.4-inch touchscreen, and upper trims can have a portrait-oriented 12-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the available setup can add a head-up display, digital rearview mirror, and surround-view camera system.
• Fuel efficiency: The 3.0-litre turbo diesel returns 11.1 L/100 km city, 8.0 highway, and 9.7 combined. The V8 4WD eTorque model is rated at 13.5 L/100 km city, 10.5 highway, and 12.1 combined, while the TRX returns 22.4 L/100 km city, 16.5 highway, and 19.8 combined.

Which 2023 RAM 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2023 RAM 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Tradesman, Big Horn, Sport, Rebel, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, Limited, and TRX.

Here's the short version:

• Tradesman: This is the least expensive path into the lineup, but it is also the most basic. It makes sense if you want the Ram name and core truck capability without paying for the upscale features that define the higher trims.
• Big Horn: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday appeal without jumping too far in price. It is a sensible middle ground if you want a more polished truck than the Tradesman but do not need luxury touches.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and a stronger style focus. It sits above the mainstream trims and suits you if appearance matters as much as utility.
• Rebel: This is the trim to consider if you want the off-road-oriented setup described in the review, including a 2.5-centimetre lift, skid plates, and hill-descent control.
• Laramie: This is the point where the cabin starts to feel notably more upscale, making it a good fit if you want comfort and premium materials without going all the way to the top trims.
• Limited Longhorn: Pick this if you want a more luxurious, Western-themed take on the Ram formula. It sits near the top of the range and is aimed at buyers who value presentation and interior richness.
• Limited: This is the most polished mainstream choice and the one featured in the review. It brings leather, open-pore wood, a 12-inch portrait-oriented screen, and available tech upgrades, making it the best fit if you want the most refined everyday experience.
• TRX: This is the extreme performance and off-road model, with a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 and serious hardware. It is for you if outright capability and drama matter more than efficiency or value.

Safety-package note: advanced driver-assist features are not standard, so you should check carefully for the equipment you want on the specific truck you are considering.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 RAM 1500?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,379 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.73% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $41,181 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 RAM 1500's resale value?

The current average of $41,181 CAD sits slightly below last year's $46,133 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the truck is more accessible to used buyers today than it was a year ago. For a future seller, that can mean you may need to price competitively to stand out, especially if the market continues to favour shoppers.

Even so, the Ram’s strong comfort, premium feel, and broad appeal help support demand. Trucks with a reputation for refinement and owner satisfaction tend to hold buyer interest better over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 RAM 1500 safe?

The Ram 1500 earns five-star ratings from NHTSA, and the IIHS gives it Good marks across the board except for Marginal grades for seat belt reminders and LATCH ease of use.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Ram 1500 falters a bit on standard advanced driver-assist systems. Nothing is standard across the board, not even forward collision warning. Other features like blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning are all either optional or part of a package.

If you do add blind-spot monitoring, it can cover the length of any trailer you might be dragging behind you. We really appreciate this function when towing on crowded streets.

The IIHS also gives the Limited, Longhorn and TRX headlights a Good grade, but Marginal marks on all other trims.

Should I buy a 2023 RAM 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.73% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2023 brings a refined cabin, strong powertrain, and a tech upgrade with an available reconfigurable 12-inch gauge cluster.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $40,164 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $41,181 CAD average.
• It blends comfort, utility, technology, and driving character in a way that is easy to appreciate.

The bottom line: If you want the newer truck with slightly better market positioning and a fresh tech update, the 2023 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is saving money and you still want the Ram’s comfort-first personality, the 2022 is the smarter value play.
