Is the 2022 Volvo XC90 a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Volvo XC90 earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its spacious interior, impressive safety features, and luxurious feel. The XC90 also stands out for its quiet cabin and distinctive eco-minded appeal, especially if you want a premium three-row SUV with hybrid technology. The expert assessment also describes the XC90 as a vehicle that can be counted on for a refined, confidence-inspiring drive, especially in family use.

If you are buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic durability and more about making sure the vehicle’s technology and equipment still suit your expectations.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volvo XC90?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Momentum is the least expensive entry point, while R-Design and Inscription add more upscale presentation. The higher trims also bring features such as 20-inch wheels, and the standard leather-free approach may not suit every buyer.
• Powertrain: You can choose from T5, T6, and Recharge powertrains. The T5 uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, the T6 adds supercharging, and the Recharge plug-in hybrid brings the strongest output and the most efficiency-focused setup.
• Safety package: Pilot Assist combines lane-centering, set-speed and following-distance support for highway driving, alongside blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking assist front and rear, lane-keeping aid, adaptive cruise control, oncoming lane mitigation, and road-sign recognition.
• Infotainment: The XC90 uses a nine-inch portrait touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto capability. A 12.3-inch digital instrument panel is also included, but the system can feel slow to respond.
• Fuel efficiency: The T5 is rated at 11.5 L/100 km city, 8.4 highway, and 10.1 combined. The T6 is rated at 12.4 L/100 km city, 8.9 highway, and 10.8 combined. The Recharge gets 8.8 L/100 km combined in hybrid mode and 4.0 Le/100 km, while the extended-range version is rated at 3.4 Le/100 km.

Which 2022 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volvo XC90 is offered in 7 trim levels: Momentum, T6 AWD Momentum, T6 AWD R-Design, T6 AWD Inscription, Recharge Inscription Expression PHEV, Recharge R-Design, and Recharge Inscription.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the entry point and the best fit if you want the XC90’s core safety, style, and three-row layout without paying for extra luxury features.
• T6 AWD Momentum: This is the best-value trim if you want more power than the base setup while staying close to the lower end of the range.
• T6 AWD R-Design: Choose this if you want a sportier appearance and the standard Harman-Kardon audio system that comes with R-Design models.
• T6 AWD Inscription: This is the more upscale gas trim, and it suits you if you want the most polished non-hybrid presentation.
• Recharge Inscription Expression PHEV: This is the most accessible plug-in hybrid choice and the best fit if you want electrified driving without jumping straight to the priciest versions.
• Recharge R-Design: Pick this if you want the plug-in hybrid powertrain with a sportier look and feel.
• Recharge Inscription: This is the top-end choice for buyers who want the most premium plug-in hybrid version.

The Advanced package adds a head-up display, a 360-degree surround-view camera, and an advanced air cleaner, which are worth considering if they are available on the vehicle you are shopping.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volvo XC90?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 37.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 120 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.52% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $41,400 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $41,400 CAD sits slightly below last year's $50,196 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the XC90 has become more accessible to used buyers, which can help keep demand steady in the near term. For future sellers, the current discount versus last year means there is less room for appreciation unless market conditions tighten. Well-equipped examples with strong condition and desirable features should still attract attention from shoppers who want a premium three-row SUV.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2022 XC90 received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick+ designation, and it earned a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The XC90 comes with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking assist front and rear, rain-sensing wipers with integrated washers, slippery road alert, lane-keeping aid, adaptive cruise control, oncoming lane mitigation, and road-sign recognition. Pilot Assist combines several of those systems to help keep the vehicle centred in its lane and at a set speed or following distance on the highway.

Should I buy a 2022 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 37.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.52% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong safety ratings with a premium, eco-minded three-row SUV character.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $35,303 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $41,400 CAD average.
• It keeps the XC90’s safety-first luxury formula with only minimal changes.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $50,203 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $41,400 CAD average.
• It brings updated B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains and a more forward-thinking infotainment setup.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the sweet spot if you want the XC90’s strong safety reputation, premium feel, and better used-market pricing than the 2023. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the more affordable route; if you want newer powertrain and tech updates, the 2023 is the better upgrade path.
