What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Canadian lineup starts with Trendline, which uses MIB2 with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth, while higher trims move to the more advanced MIB3 system and add features such as keyless entry with push-button starting, remote engine starting, a panoramic sunroof, richer cabin materials, and more upscale lighting and display tech. The Highline R-Line stands out with perforated and piped leather upholstery, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display, and a premium audio system.
• Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic and 4Motion AWD. It can feel a bit delayed off the line because of turbo lag, so pay attention to low-speed response on your test drive.
• Safety package: Front Assist and Side Assist are standard, while Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are available. Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance, and Emergency Assist can slow the SUV to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive while Travel Assist is active.
• Infotainment: Most versions use an 8-inch MIB3 touchscreen with standard Car-Net connected services, standard App-Connect smartphone mirroring, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The base Trendline uses MIB2 with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth, while the Highline R-Line adds a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display and a redesigned navigation system.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says R-Line grades will do no better than 9.8 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test vehicle returned 9.5 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Comfortline R-Line Black Edition, and Highline R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• Trendline: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Tiguan’s core space, safety tech, and standard AWD without paying for extra cabin polish or infotainment upgrades.
• Comfortline: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds keyless entry with push-button starting and remote engine starting, making the Tiguan feel more complete for everyday use.
• Comfortline R-Line Black Edition: Choose this if you want the sportier R-Line look and the blacked-out appearance treatment without jumping all the way to the top trim.
• Highline R-Line: This is the most upscale version, with the richest cabin, the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display, premium audio, and standard Park Assist.

Travel Assist is available, and Emergency Assist works when Travel Assist is active.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 593 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.40% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $25,000 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $25,000 CAD sits slightly below last year's $29,205 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Tiguan has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help demand in the near term. For a future seller, it also means you may need to price competitively if you want to stand out against a fairly active market. The good news is that the model’s broad appeal, practical size, and strong owner satisfaction should help support interest over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Front Assist, which includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and Side Assist with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard. Travel Assist adds adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance, and Emergency Assist can bring the SUV to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive while Travel Assist is active. One caveat is that Travel Assist can be awkward to engage because of the touch-sensing steering wheel controls.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.40% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 adds new safety technology while keeping the Tiguan’s familiar, practical formula.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $27,193 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $25,000 CAD average.
• It offers a more upscale look and a third-row seat.

The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2022 is the smarter starting point because prices have eased and the model still delivers strong practicality and safety tech. If you need extra passenger flexibility and are willing to pay more, the 2023 is worth a look.

The Tiguan gives you more inventory and a lower average used price, while the CX-5 asks more but brings slightly stronger city fuel economy.
