2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid test drive
overall

The 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid proves that SUVs haven’t cornered the market on practicality and capability.
The 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid is a midsize four-door sedan with a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain, including a 2.5-litre gas engine, an electric motor, a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), and front-wheel drive (FWD). It comes in five trim levels: LE, SE, SE Nightshade Edition, XLE, and XSE. Denoted by blacked-out trim, the SE Nightshade Edition is new to the Camry Hybrid for 2022, but was previously available on gasoline Camry models. Wanted another Camry hybrid after owning one for 9+ years. Great miles per gallon, reliable, and low maintenance. Can’t compare to other brands as we are loyal Toyota owners, but would highly recommend a Camry hybrid. Chose the XSE over the LE model we had prior for the added amenities (moonroof, leather seats, heated seats, sportier look, etc.). Do know that tires on a hybrid are a little pricier and don’t last as long as the tires we have put on the other Toyotas we own. Appreciate the ‘22 with the Apple CarPlay and the enhanced cruise control and lane monitoring features, etc. This car was a good value overall for its age and mileage. And always feel like a Toyota is a good value as they last so long.

Its a great car. The price is competitive but should come down a little. I chose not to get it due to personal choice of getting into and out of it. My knees are not what they used to be and the kick panels on the camry are fairly large. Larger than most cars.

Is the 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its impressive fuel economy, smooth ride, and quiet operation. They also like the stylish design and advanced features such as Apple CarPlay. For you, that makes it a strong fit if you want a practical family sedan with a straightforward efficiency focus and everyday comfort.
With 25.5% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to find value.
Is the 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for the car’s long-term appeal, fuel economy, smooth ride, and quiet operation. The expert assessment also supports that impression by highlighting the Camry Hybrid’s efficiency-focused character and its ability to deliver the kind of everyday usability many buyers want from a family sedan.
Toyota’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that hybrid-specific wear items and repair costs can be more expensive than on a conventional sedan.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE is the most stripped-down version, with 17-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch touchscreen, and no direct pressure readout for the tyre pressure monitoring system. Higher trims add 18-inch or 19-inch wheels, a 9-inch touchscreen, and more upscale equipment, so you should compare feature gaps carefully if you want the best value.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid setup with two electric motors, 208 horsepower, a CVT, and front-wheel drive. The LE is the most efficient, while the other trims use slightly more fuel.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ is standard and includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, Lane Tracing Assist, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is included on every trim level but the base LE.
- Infotainment: The LE gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims get a 9-inch screen. Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are standard, and embedded navigation is available on XLE. A 10-inch colour head-up display is available on XSE and XLE.
- Fuel efficiency: The LE is rated at 4.9 L/100 km city, 4.8 highway, and 4.9 combined. Other trims are rated at 5.3 L/100 km city, 5.0 highway, and 5.1 combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, SE, SE Nightshade Edition, XLE, and XSE.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the value pick if you want the lowest fuel consumption and the lowest entry price, but you give up some convenience and tech upgrades found higher up the range.
- SE: This is the best-value step-up for many shoppers because it adds more equipment than the LE without jumping all the way to the luxury-focused trims.
- SE Nightshade Edition: Choose this if you want the SE’s equipment with the blacked-out styling treatment that makes it stand out.
- XLE: This is the comfort-and-tech choice, with the premium JBL audio system, available embedded navigation, and available bird’s-eye view camera and ventilated seats.
- XSE: This is the most style-forward trim, with larger wheels, paddle shifters, and available head-up display.
The blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert is included on every trim level but the base LE.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 55 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.51% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $30,717 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $31,883 CAD sits slightly below last year's $34,470 CAD.
That softer pricing trend suggests the Camry Hybrid has become more accessible for used buyers, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract attention if the market stays active. Because the model has already moved down from its prior average, you may not see the same short-term price pressure that existed a year ago. Strong efficiency and broad appeal should help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid safe?
The 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid earns the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ is standard, and it includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, Lane Tracing Assist, and automatic high beams. The Camry Hybrid also comes standard with Toyota’s Star safety system, 10 airbags, three-point seatbelts for every seating position, LATCH lower anchors on the rear outboard seats, child protector locks, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on every trim level but the base LE.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.51% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 adds the SE Nightshade Edition, bringing blacked-out trim to the range.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $32,254 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $31,883 CAD average.
- It adds a Nightshade Edition with bronze wheels and Reservoir Blue paint.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2022 is the stronger buy because it combines lower average pricing with a solid deal pool and strong owner satisfaction. If you prefer the newer model-year styling update and are willing to pay a bit more, the 2023 is the cleaner alternative for you.
