CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Subaru Forester
overall

Summary
With 15 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,995 CAD, 26.7% of 2022 Subaru Forester listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru Forester 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Forester stands out as a compact crossover SUV that was updated with fresh design details, an upgraded package of EyeSight driving assistance technologies, and improved utility features. Those changes help it remain appealing as an all-around choice, especially for buyers who value safety technology and everyday practicality.
Its biggest distinction is the new-for-2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness, which is aimed at taking the Forester farther off-road. Subaru says it adds extra clearance, more body cladding, and an interior designed to get dirty, giving the model a more rugged character than the standard Forester. That makes the 2022 Forester especially interesting for shoppers who want a compact SUV with a tougher, more adventurous edge.
Owner feedback broadly supports that appeal, with praise for the comfortable ride, spacious interior, safety features, and all-wheel-drive capability. At the same time, some reviewers pointed to outdated styling, limited storage space, and a desire for more powerful performance, so the Forester’s strengths are balanced by a few familiar compromises.

I am not an electronic/computer geek and was a bit concerned about all the new technology. Learning to take advantage of all the Subaru Forester has to offer is actually easier than I thought it would be and so appreciated in daily driving. Roomy four door and covered cargo area, keyless entry is handy when my hands are full, great rear vision camera, auto heat/cooling settings and so many great features...wow! A few more cubbies would be my choice of added features. I was driving a 2016 Ford Escape prior to the Forester and liked the trays inside the front doors, the extra little shelf in the console, an extra shelf in the glove box, a couple small change holders by the gear shift and a slightly deeper shelf mid dashboard on top and by the shifter. Overall...I do enjoy the Subaru and the AWD feature that I havent had on any of my other vehicles. In snowy weather I have found it to be quite helpful.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester reliable?

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with praise for its safety features, AWD capability, and overall usefulness. The expert review also describes it as durable and well suited to daily living, which supports the case for long-term confidence. Subaru’s practical approach and strong owner approval suggest manageable ownership risk for used buyers, especially if you prioritise consistency over flash.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim includes the essentials, but higher trims add more comfort and convenience, while Wilderness brings a tougher look and off-road focus. Limited and Premier trims also add DriverFocus, which monitors for drowsiness and distraction.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 182 horsepower, a CVT, and all-wheel drive. The Wilderness version adds a design Subaru says improves initial torque supply, plus a higher towing capacity.
- Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are also included among the standard and available safety features.
- Infotainment: Base models use a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and Starlink connected services. Touring trim and higher get an 8-inch screen, with navigation and Harman Kardon audio available.
- Fuel efficiency: According to Natural Resources Canada, the Wilderness should consume 9.0 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 9.1 L/100 km.
Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 7 trim levels: base, Convenience, Touring, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- base: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest cost. You still get standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight 4.0, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Convenience: This trim is the sensible step up if you want a little more equipment without moving too far up the price ladder. It keeps the Forester’s practical formula intact while broadening the appeal.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim if you want the more polished infotainment setup, since it brings the 8-inch screen and opens the door to navigation and Harman Kardon audio.
- Sport: Choose this if you want a more expressive version of the Forester without going all the way to the Wilderness. It sits above the mainstream trims and adds a more distinctive character.
- Wilderness: Pick this if you want the most adventurous Forester. It adds extra clearance, more body cladding, an interior designed to get dirty, a 180-degree forward-view camera, all-terrain tyres, and a skid plate.
- Limited: This is a strong choice if you want more comfort and technology, including DriverFocus for drowsiness and distraction monitoring.
- Premier: This is the most upscale Forester in the lineup, and it also includes DriverFocus.
For safety-focused shoppers, EyeSight 4.0 is standard, while DriverFocus is reserved for Limited and Premier trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 198 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.87% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $27,985 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $28,175 CAD sits slightly below last year's $31,609 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can be helpful if you’re buying now but less favourable if you’re planning to sell soon. A softer used-price environment usually means future sellers may need to price more competitively to stand out. Even so, the Forester’s strong owner satisfaction and practical reputation should help support demand over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?
The 2022 Subaru Forester earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in all evaluations except rollover resistance, which results in a four-star assessment.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru’s EyeSight 4.0 safety system is standard, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. The Forester also includes a rear-seat reminder system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking. Limited and Premier trims add DriverFocus, which monitors for drowsiness and distraction and also adds gesture control for climate adjustments.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.87% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds fresh design details, upgraded EyeSight technology, and the Wilderness trim for buyers who want more rugged capability.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $30,044 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,175 CAD average.
- It adds next-generation EyeSight safety features and an improved standard infotainment system.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the better pick if you want stronger value and more negotiating room. If you can stretch for the 2023, you get newer tech, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2022’s softer market and broader deal availability.
