What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base model is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience equipment. Touring and above get the larger 8-inch screen, and Limited and Premier trims add DriverFocus. The Wilderness stands apart with extra clearance, more body cladding, and a dirt-friendly interior.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. It is adequate in normal driving, but the review notes that you may still wish for more power.
• Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are also included among the standard and available safety features.
• Infotainment: Base trims use a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and Starlink connected services. Touring and higher trims get an 8-inch screen, with available navigation and Harman Kardon audio.
• Fuel efficiency: According to Natural Resources Canada, the Wilderness should use 9.0 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 9.1 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 7 trim levels: base, Convenience, Touring, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest price. You still get standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight 4.0, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so it covers the essentials well.
• Convenience: This trim is the logical step up if you want a little more equipment without moving too far up the price ladder. It should suit you if you want a practical daily driver with a bit more comfort than the base model.
• Touring: This is the best-value choice if you want the more polished infotainment setup. It brings the 8-inch screen and opens the door to available navigation and Harman Kardon audio.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a more style-forward Forester without going into the Wilderness’s off-road focus. It sits in the middle of the range and broadens the lineup for shoppers who want something a bit more distinctive.
• Wilderness: Pick this if you want the most capable Forester for rough roads and off-pavement use. It adds extra ground clearance, all-terrain tyres, a front skid plate, a full-size spare, and a 180-degree forward-view camera.
• Limited: This is the trim to consider if you want more comfort and driver monitoring. It adds DriverFocus, which monitors for drowsiness and distraction.
• Premier: This is the most upscale Forester in the range, and it also includes DriverFocus. Choose it if you want the most complete equipment set in the lineup.

Limited and Premier trims equip the 2022 Forester with DriverFocus, while the Wilderness may require re-testing because of its modified height.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 190 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.44% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $27,977 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $29,643 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,025 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can make it harder for a future seller to command top dollar immediately. Even so, the Forester’s practical reputation and broad appeal help support demand. If you keep the vehicle in strong condition and choose a desirable trim, you should still have a solid chance of attracting shoppers later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2022 Subaru Forester earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in all evaluations except rollover resistance, where it gets a four-star assessment.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight 4.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist. Subaru also adds a new Automatic Emergency Steering system that works at speeds under 80 kilometres per hour. Among the standard and available safety features, the Forester includes a rear-seat reminder system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking.

As a caveat, the expert review notes that the rollover result is lower than the rest of the NHTSA scores, and the Wilderness may require re-testing because of its modified height.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.44% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Subaru added fresh design details, upgraded EyeSight technology, and the Wilderness trim.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $29,686 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $29,643 CAD average.
• It adds next-generation EyeSight and an improved standard infotainment system.

The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2022 is the stronger starting point because prices have eased and the model already brings the updated safety and utility package. If you are willing to pay a bit more for the next model year’s refinements, the 2023 is the cleaner alternative for shoppers who prioritise the newest standard tech.
