Why it stands out
When you want a Subaru and need more than five-passenger seating capacity, the 2022 Subaru Ascent is ready to serve. It stands out as the brand’s midsize three-row SUV, making it the only Subaru built to carry more than five people. That gives it a clear role in the lineup for buyers who like Subaru’s reputation for durability, safety, and all-weather confidence but need extra seating.
For 2022, Subaru makes one change to the Ascent lineup by adding a new Onyx Edition with blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery. That update gives the SUV a more distinctive look and a more practical interior treatment for active families. The 2022 Subaru Ascent’s appeal is straightforward: it combines Subaru’s familiar strengths with the space and flexibility of a three-row SUV, while the new edition adds a bit more style and utility.

I absolutely love this car. I previously drove a Crosstrek, which I also loved and hated to part ways with. My growing family left me no choice, but man am I happy with this new ride! I didn’t need all the bells and whistles that the touring offers, but I definitely like them! The ride is smooth, and even though it is a much larger car that my Crosstrek, it doesn’t feel like I’m driving a tank down the road!

Hard to decide between Ascent touring and Volvo XC90….identical and amazing safety features that assist the driver tremendously and both cars will save your life in an accident. For me came down to holding value the Volvo resale valué is terrible with so much money lost. Also cost of service and parts much higher with Volvo. Subaru. Ascent all the safety and luxury and extra room (3rd row seating!!!) but affordability for ownership and purchasing! I bought a 2022 Ascent with just 5000 miles…..saved thousand off off a new car!!

Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent a good car?
Yes — you’re looking at a 5/5 user-rated SUV with an expert rating of 7.5/10. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
The 2022 Subaru Ascent is aimed at you if you want a Subaru with more than five-passenger seating capacity, standard all-wheel drive, and a clear family-hauling role. Subaru’s durability-and-safety reputation fits that mission, and the new Onyx Edition adds a more distinctive look plus a more practical interior treatment for active households.
There are 28.9% of listings priced as good or great deals, which points to a market with some worthwhile opportunities.
Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 Ascent leans into Subaru’s reputation for durability, safety, and all-weather confidence, and the expert assessment reinforces that practical, family-first character. Standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight driver assistance, and the model’s broad capability help it feel like a dependable choice for everyday use and rough-weather driving.
The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that the driver-assistance system can be sensitive in certain conditions, so you’ll want to verify that its cameras and related functions behave properly during a test drive.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Ascent?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while Touring adds an 8-inch display and available connected services. The Onyx Edition stands out with blacked-out exterior trim, black 20-inch wheels, a unique grille, special interior trim, and water-repellant StarTex upholstery, while Premier adds features such as a digital rearview mirror and a 180-degree-view front camera.
- Powertrain: Every 2022 Ascent uses a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and standard AWD. Subaru’s X-Mode traction control, hill descent control, and 22 cm of ground clearance add capability, and the CVT includes eight programmed ratios and manual shift control.
- Safety package: EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centring technology. Steering responsive LED headlights with automatic high-beam assist are also standard. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert requires at least the Touring trim, and reverse automatic braking is available.
- Infotainment: The base system uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a CD player. Touring gets an 8-inch display with available Starlink connected services, and the system keeps physical volume and tuning knobs plus shortcut buttons.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the Ascent at 10.5 L/100 km combined, with 11.7 L/100 km in the city and 9.0 L/100 km on the highway. In testing, it averaged 11.5 L/100 km.
Which 2022 Subaru Ascent trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Ascent is offered in 5 trim levels: Convenience, Touring, Onyx Edition, Limited, and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- Convenience: This is the entry point if you want the Ascent’s core strengths at the lowest price, including standard AWD, EyeSight, and the 6.5-inch infotainment system. It makes sense if you care most about value and need the basics done well.
- Touring: This trim adds the 8-inch display, available Starlink connected services, and is the minimum trim for blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. It’s the best-value choice if you want a stronger mix of convenience and safety equipment.
- Onyx Edition: This is the style-and-practicality pick, with blacked-out exterior trim, black 20-inch wheels, StarTex upholstery, and a more distinctive cabin and exterior treatment. It suits you if you want the year’s new look and a more active-family-friendly interior.
- Limited: This trim sits above the Onyx Edition in the lineup and is part of the broader step-up path for shoppers who want more equipment without going all the way to the top.
- Premier: This is the most feature-rich choice, adding items such as a digital rearview mirror and a 180-degree-view front camera. It’s the trim to target if you want the most technology and convenience features.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert starts at Touring, so that’s the key safety-package threshold to keep in mind.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Ascent?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to compare options and enough price movement to create opportunities.
- Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 142 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.05% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $30,805 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Ascent's resale value?
The current average of $31,363 CAD sits slightly below last year's $34,865 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to be realistic about where their asking price lands. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who purchased when prices were higher. Strong demand for practical, safety-focused family SUVs can still support resale, especially for well-equipped examples in good condition.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent safe?
The 2022 Subaru Ascent earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS and five-star ratings in all NHTSA evaluations except rollover resistance, where it earns a four-star rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight driver-assist technology is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centring technology. Standard safety equipment also includes steering responsive LED headlights with automatic high-beam assist. If you want blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, you need at least the Touring trim.
One caveat is that the camera-based system can struggle in low, direct sunlight, and the adaptive cruise and lane-centring functions can feel less refined than you might expect. That doesn’t erase the Ascent’s strong safety credentials, but it is worth checking carefully on a test drive.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Ascent or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.05% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- This year adds the new Onyx Edition with blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery.
The bottom line: The 2022 Subaru Ascent makes the most sense if you want Subaru’s three-row family SUV with standard AWD, strong safety credentials, and a fresh trim addition for the year. If you’re shopping on price, the softer market and decent deal availability make this a sensible time to buy; if you want the newest styling and practical interior touches, the 2022 model year is the one to target.
